In the next colloquium 6th February, professor Teemu Roos will give a talk “Same but different – Making online education scalable but personal”. Presentations and the discussion will be recorded and published in Unitube soon after the events.

Vice-dean of the Faculty of Science, Hannu Toivonen, gave first introduction of the colloquium aims: to bring people together to discuss the future of education and to get inspiration from keynote speakers. Jaakko Kurhila discussed in the first actual colloquium talk the future of university in large scale. University is on the other hand cultivating academic top-researchers and on the other hand creating new knowledge and experts to benefit the whole society. Kurhila named two big challenges of present university: having been strictly focused on encouraging research careers, and reluctance to take any risks to create new.

There was a vivid discussion after the talk. Especially Kurhila’s statement of the university being a pyramid was questioned from various angles. According to Kurhila, university has been concentrating on pushing students, and at later stages researchers, upwards and those who are not staying in that academic pyramid are from the system point of view failures. How to modernise the pyramid structure – or does any pyramid even exists – was discussed in both abstract level and through concrete examples.

Seuraavassa kollokviossa 6.2. professori Teemu Roos puhuu otsikolla “Same but different: Making online education scalable but personal”. Kaikki kiinnostuneet yliopistolaiset ovat tervetulleita kollokvion avoimiin tilaisuuksiin. Luennot keskusteluineen myös tallennetaan ja julkaistaan myöhemmin Unitubessa.

Matemaattis-luonnontieteellisen tiedekunnan varadekaani Hannu Toivonen kertoi tilaisuuden aluksi kollokvion tavoitteista: tuoda ihmisiä yhteen pohtimaan opetuksen ja oppimisen tulevaisuutta keynote-puheenvuorojen innoittamana. Yliopiston digitalisaatiojohtaja Jaakko Kurhila piti kollokvion ensimmäisen varsinaisen esityksen, jossa pohdittiin laajasti yliopistokoulutuksen asemaa toisaalta akateemisten huippuosaajien kasvattamona ja toisaalta laajemmassa kontekstissa tuomassa tietoa ja osaajia koko yhteiskunnalle. Kurhila nosti yliopiston isoiksi kehityshaasteiksi nykyisen keskittymisen pelkkään yliopistotutkimukseen muualle suuntautuvien urien tukemisen sijaan ja haluttomuuden ottaa riskejä uudistumisessa.

Esityksen jälkeen käytiin vilkasta keskustelua. Erityisesti Kurhilan esittämä ajatus yliopistona pyramidina herätti kysymyksiä ja kommentteja. Kurhilan mukaan yliopisto on perinteisesti keskittynyt puskemaan opiskelijoita, ja ylemmillä tasoilla tutkijoita, yhä ylemmäs akateemista pyramidia, josta valtaosa kuitenkin joutuu ulos jossakin vaiheessa ja on siten ikään kuin epäonnistuja. Pyramidin kehittämisestä nykyaikaan paremmin sopivaan suuntaan – tai siitä onko mitään pyramidia edes olemassa – keskusteltiin sekä abstraktilla tasolla että esimerkkien kautta.
