DVM Sanna Hellström’s academic dissertation was presented, with the permission of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Helsinki, for public examination in Auditorium Arppeanum, Helsinki on 9th September 2011.

Title of thesis is “Contamination routes and control of Listeria monocytogenes in food production”. The opponent was docent, DVM, PhD Sebastian Hielm from Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the custos was professor Hannu Korkeala.

Dissertations: 19.8.2011 DVM Päivikki Perko-Mäkelä

DVM Päivikki Perko-Mäkelä’s academic dissertation was presented, with the permission of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Helsinki, for public examination in Seinäjoki, Kampusranta 9 B, Auditorio 2, Frami on 19th August 2011, at 12 o’clock noon.

Title of thesis is “Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli in Finnish poultry production”. The opponent was professor Anja Siitonen from National Institute of Health and Welfare and custos was professor Marja-Liisa Hänninen.

Course in management of environmental health control is held in September

As part of extension studies called Food Hygienist Examination, a course in management of food and environmental health control is held in 19th September – 7th October in Viikki. The Food Hygienist Examination is also a part of Specialist Degree in Veterinary Medicine in the field of food and environmental hygiene as well as hygiene of food manufacture.

The aim of the Food Hygienist Examination is to increase the expertise of veterinarians working in various sectors of food and environmental hygiene. In addition to the aforementioned course in management of food and environmental health control, these extension studies consist of practical training in municipal food and environmental health control unit and working as a meat inspection veterinarian. The student has to pass two examinations to complete the studies.

Summer School 2011

Department of Food Hygiene and Environmental Health offers veterinary students an opportunity for research training in the Summer School.

The purpose of the Summer School is to produce a good-quality licentiate thesis, to familiarize students with the fascinating world of science, to familiarize students with the field of food and environmental hygiene and to give an idea on the research activities of the Department.

The Summer School has been organized already over 10 times and it is based on the strong research tradition of the Department.

Riikka Laukkanen-Ninios received the award of the best doctoral thesis

DVM Riikka Laukkanen-Ninios received the award of the best doctoral thesis of the year 2010 in the ABS Graduate School for her PhD thesis ”Enteropathogenic Yersinia in pork production”. Professor Katrina Nordström from Aalto University chose the winner from four preselected candidates. In total, 17 doctoral theses were finished in the ABS Graduate School in 2010.

Previously, Riikka Laukkanen-Ninios received an award for commendable research in the field of food sciences by the Finnish Association of Food Sciences for her thesis.

The Finnish Graduate School on Applied Bioscience: Bioengineering, Food & Nutrition, Environment (ABS graduate school) was established in the beginning of 1995. The ABS Graduate School is an associated graduate school of four universities, University of Helsinki , University of Turku, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Campus and Aalto University, and four research instutes, MTT Agrifood Research Finland, National Institute for Health and Welfare, The Finnish Food Safety Authority, Evira and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.
