SAVE

Project SAVE (a.k.a. Pilot Gypsum) studies gypsum treatment of fields as a mean to reduce phosphorus leaching from agriculture. Project SAVE studies both social feasibility and environmental effectiveness of gypsum in reducing the eutrophication of the Finnish Archipelago Sea. The pilot takes place in Savijoki river basin within the communes of Lieto and Paimio in co-operation with local farmers. In addition to the phosphorus loads, the project studies the effects gypsum has on soil and on the aquatic population of the river. The pilot will face all challenges of organizing a large scale use of gypsum and provides information for suitability of gypsum treatment as part of farming in the whole southern Finland. Project SAVE is a key project for the Finnish Government and is funded by the Ministry of Environment for years 2016-2018. In addition, Project SAVE is a part of Project NutriTrade, which is funded by EU through the Central Baltic INTERREG Program.
