ME 231 Open GIS and Spatial Data Infrastructures (5 credits)

- Replaces the former course GIS103 (87403) Open GIS & Spatial Data Infrastructure 5 cr.
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the basic concept and possibilities of open GIS data, open source GIS software and spatial data infrastructures.
After completing the course the student is able to search for and utilize open spatial data, assess its quality and harness the data using open source software. The student can also carry out GIS analyses and create map visualizations independently with open source software utilizing both desktop and web based services, and understands the principles of open data standards and licensing.

Module 0 Introductory module An introduction to Open GIS & SDIs
Module 1 – Introducing open source GIS software
Module 2 – Acquiring open spatial data
Module 3 – Metadata & open data quality assessment
Module 4 – Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI)
Module 5 – Open GIS analysis
Module 6 – Open spatial data visualization & communication Programs: basic skills in QGIS, CartoDB, OpenStreetMap, LasTOOLS & Geoserver.
Study material and literature
The study material for the written examination will consist of scientific articles, which will be distributed during the course.

0-5. The course grade is determined according to the practical exercises (60 %) and the written examination (40 %), which will both be evaluated on the scale of 0-5. The course consists of 10 practical exercises, out of which 8+1 are compulsory.
