Results from GIERI

The GIERI programme has officially closed on 30th June 2018.

The project overall objective was reached.  Institutional capacity of College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) in teaching and research of Geoinformatics was strengthened by

  1. New curriculum developed for the first MSc programme in Geoinformatics in Eritrea. Official launch of the MSc programme at CASS in March 2016 with 12 students enrolled.
  2. All students successfully completed eight courses in the curriculum and defended their MSc theses.
  3. Three teachers from CASS, six teachers from other partner colleges, and three staff members from Eritrea Mapping and Information Centre  have been awarded MSC in Geoinformatics.
  4. The teachers are now adapting the acquired skills and knowledge in teaching BSc/BA –level students in their home collages.
  5. Improvement of teaching materials, improved quality of teaching: Eight sets of new course materials developed for the MSc programme, new software (QGIS, GRASS, SAGA, R), datasets acquired and collected, hardware procurements for two Geoinformatics labs (MSc and BSc students)
  6. Supporting staff (GIS Lab technicians) trained on lab maintenance and daily operations.
  7. Creation of national framework of professionals and contributing to producing basic information useful for many levels of the Ethiopian society

GIERI was supported by
