Health and political engagement

This project studies the effect of health on political engagement, namely turnout, civic participation, political interest and political knowledge. The project started with the Academy of Finland funding (2013-17) at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki.

The main contribution of the project is to increase understanding of the conditions under which poor health contributes to lower political engagement. Based on individual level register-data from Finland and comparative data from European social survey, the project has three subprojects:

  • The effect of health on turnout
  • The effect of health on political engagement and the extent to which the effect is channeled through socioeconomic status and social connectedness
  • Cross-national variation in the impact of health on turnout according to institutional-level factors
