Moving the New Year Seminar online

ISHA Helsinki and the board of ISHA International had a meeting today about the upcoming New Year seminar and discussed how we could carry out the seminar under the restrictions. Unfortunately, due to the recent restrictions by the Finnish authorities and University of Helsinki on public gatherings and university activities, we decided to cancel the hybrid model, and move it completely online. We couldn’t see a way to organise the seminar safely and according to the restrictions, since in-person gatherings or activities organised (also in the name of the student organisations) are forbidden until the 17th January. We are at the moment letting the participants know about the situation.

We are really devastated that we had to make this decision and not organise the seminar physically, but at the moment moving the seminar online seems like the most feasible option. Sadly we cannot postpone the seminar once again, but we will work on organising an unofficial gathering in Helsinki later in the spring for the participants of the seminar and other ISHA people who would like to come and experience life in Helsinki. Hopefully, then the pandemic will be kinder to our plans. We wish you the best of New Year and we hope to see you soon in Helsinki!

Participants list for ISHA New Year Seminar 2022

Here is a list of the participants of the seminar “Many Faces of Inequality”. Some changes have been made concerning the workshops. ISHA activities have been much affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the potential risk of many seminar participants having to cancel their seminar attendance, we have reduced the number of workshops to three. This is to prevent the workshop leaders from having to labour for a workshop that may be cancelled due to a lack of participants.

The workshops “Economic Inequality”, “PhD Workshop” and a workshop that is a combination of the workshops “Minorities and Inequality” and “Representation and Inequality” will be held.

In the case that you would have to cancel your visit to Helsinki due to the Covid-19 restrictions on entry to the country, you will have the option to participate remotely in the workshops and academic parts of the seminar. We will work on making online participation possible.

In our New Year Seminar, we aim to delve deep into the roots and continuities of inequality and changes in different forms of discrimination in various areas of societies. Discrimination has existed for as long as humanity itself, and in order to understand the current state of the world, we must understand inequalities in the past. The workshops concentrate on different areas of inequalities – you can check a full list of the workshops here. Other academic programme of the seminar will consist of key-note lectures, and a roundtable discussion about inequalities in work and working life. To introduce the participants to the history of Helsinki and its surroundings, we will also plan a day trip to Espoo and a museum visit.

Lastly, not forgetting fun non-academic activities, we will show the participants around Helsinki and get them acquainted with the local student life. And yes, of course, there will be a sauna visit at some point of the week, in addition to the traditional sitsit (a fun dinner party!) combined with a National Food and Drinks Party! Apply now to the first ISHA event of 2022! The participation fee for the seminar will be 100€ and it includes the academic and cultural programme, accommodation, public transport tickets in Helsinki and three meals a day.

Call for Workshop Leaders for our “Many Faces of Inequality” ISHA New Year Seminar 2022!

(in English below)

ISHA Helsinki (International Students of History Association Helsinki) järjestää ensi tammikuussa 10-16.1.2022 kansainvälisen historian opiskelijoiden seminaarin aiheella “Many Faces of Inequality”.

Onko sinulla akateemista kokemusta seminaarin teeman aiheista? Näkisitkö itsesi ohjaamassa akateemista työpajaa englannin kielellä eri taustoista tuleville kansainvälisille opiskelijoille? Onko sinulla jokin toinen idea työpajan
aiheeksi, jonka haluaisit toteuttaa osana seminaaria?

Odotamme innolla yhteydenottoanne!
