I just picked up the first batch of thin sections on Duluth and Portimo complexes yesterday. Thanks to Ferenc Molnár from GTK for providing them. Looking good!

Thin sections are 0.03 mm “thick” (thinner than your hair) slices from rocks that you can view under a polarizing microscope. The polarized light goes through the different minerals. Different minerals refract this light in different ways, making it possible to identify them and study the textures of the rocks in much more detail. More on these later!

Ohuthieet ovat 0.03 mm “paksuja” (ohuempia kuin hiuksesi) leikkeitä kivistä. Niitä tarkastellaan polarisaatiomikroskoopilla. Polarisoitu valo johdetaan kivisiivun läpi, jolloin eri mineraalit taittavat valoa eri tavoilla. Näin niitä on paljon helpompi tunnistaa ja analysoida kuin käsinäytteessä. Näistä lisää myöhemmin!
