Kehitystutkimuksen seura järjestää torstaina 18. lokakuuta syysseminaarin yhteistyössä Ekosäätiön kanssa. Seminaarin kattoteemana on automatisaatio, digitalisaatio ja näiden prosessien vaikutus globaalisti demokratiaan, köyhyyteen ja työhön. Tilaisuus kulkee otsikolla “Human meets Machine – bright or bleak future?” ja on jaettu kahteen osaan.

Ensimmäinen osio, “Surveillance and Democracy”, alkaa kello 13.00 ja kestää kello 14.30 asti. Osiossa puhujina toimivat tietoturvayhtiö F-Securen varapääjohtaja Matti Aksela, kehitysmaatutkimuksen professori Barry Gills Helsingin yliopistosta, tekoälyn ja tekoälyn etiikan tutkija Michael Laakasuo Helsingin yliopistosta ja tutkija Elina Sinkkonen Ulkopoliittisesta Instituutista.

Kello 14.30 :sta kello 16.00 asti kestävä toinen osio kulkee otsikolla “Automation, Labour and Development.” Puhujina kehitystaloustieteilijä Sam Jones UNU-Wider – instituutista, kehitysmaatutkimuksen apulaisprofessori Franklin Obeng-Odoom Helsingin yliopistosta, väitöskirjatutkija Anna Salmivaara Helsingin yliopistosta ja tutkija Nikodemus Solitander kauppakorkeakoulu Hankenilta. Tilaisuuden juontaa Lyydia Kilpi Kehitystutkimuksen seurasta.

Seminaari järjestetään toisen kerroksen esitelmätilassa Tiedekulmassa (Yliopistonkatu 4). Tila on esteetön. Tapahtuma on englanninkielinen ja avoin kaikille osallistujille. Tilaisuudessa ei ole kahvitarjoilua, mutta Tiedekulman kahvila palvelee ensimmäisessä kerroksessa.

The Finnish Society for Development Research (FSDR) is organizing an autumn seminar on Thursday 18th of October in collaboration with the Ecofoundation. The seminar’s main theme will be automatization, digitalization and the impact of these processes on global scenarios of democracy, poverty and labour. The seminar runs under the title “Human meets Machine – bright or bleak future?” and is divided into two subsections.

The first section, “Surveillance and Democracy”, starts at 1:00 pm and ends at 2:30 pm. The speakers will be Matti Aksela, the Vice President of the cyber security company F-Secure, Barry Gills, the professor of Development Studies from the University of Helsinki, Michael Laakasuo, a researcher of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics at the University of Helsinki, and researcher Elina Sinkkonen from the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.

The second section, which runs from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm, runs under the heading “Automation, Labour and Development.” Speakers: the development economist Sam Jones from the UNU-Wider Institute, Franklin Obeng-Odoom, Associate Professor of Development Studies at the University of Helsinki, doctoral researcher Anna Salmivaara from the University of Helsinki and researcher Nikodemus Solitander from the Hanken School of Economics. The event will be chaired by Lyydia Kilpi from the Finnish Society for Development Research.

The seminar will be held on the second floor of Think Corner (Yliopistonkatu 4). The space is accessible. The event will be held in English and is open for everyone. There will be no coffee service at the event but the Think Corner café serves on the first floor.
