Intensive course: Ethnography of Communication (5 cr)

The three-day intensive course is designed to introduce Ethnography of Communication, which is a theoretical-methodological approach to study cultural features in language and social interaction.  The intensive course is designed for doctoral students who are interested in general in the relationship between language, social interaction and culture. Also, the intensive course is aimed at students who would like explore cultural beliefs, values, and meanings as they appear in social interaction. In addition to familiarizing oneself on the basic principles of Ethnography of Communication, the intensive course includes practical tasks on field observation, on cultural discourse analysis, and on studying speech codes.

Associate Professor Michaela Winchatz, DePaul University, Chicagoco (cultural terms for talk in German and English, language and power, addressing, ethnographic fieldwork methods);
Professor Evelyn Ho
, University of San Fransisco (health communication, discursive construction of alternative/Chinese/holistic medicine);
Assistant Professor Leah Sprain, University of Colorado, Boulder (meetings, deliberation, environmental communication and social movement activism, interface of practice & theory);
University Lecturer Saila Poutiainen, University of Helsinki

The intensive course is taught in English. However, there is a Finnish speaking teacher present, and some of the discussions could be conducted in Finnish.

Maximum of 20 students will be accepted and the priority is given to the doctoral students in the Doctoral Programme in Language Studies. Accepted students will be sent a questionnaire related to information on their studies and research, which has to be returned to the course organisers in May. The detailed information will be sent after the registration deadline.
