Stance, affect, enregisterment

Professor  Scott Kiesling (University of Pittsburgh)

The workshop is meant for PhD students or post-docs working on any research area dealing with stance, affect and enregisterment. Scott is also a specialist on language and gender. (His new book, Language, Gender and Sexuality, was released by Routledge in March 2019.) In this workshop, he will provide theoretical and methodological background pertaining to research in these main areas. Students and researchers will have the opportunity to discuss their own data during the workshop. In addition to his work on gender, Professor Scott is also known for his research on stance and style in Pittsburghese. He has been a frequent collaborator with his colleague, Barbara Johnstone.

The workshop will consist of

  • an introductory lecture by Scott Kiesling
  • 90-minutes slots for presentation of students’/researchers’ projects and data
  • a concluding discussion.

The 90 minutes slot for each student will consist of

  • a15-minute description of the project (research questions, theoretical background, and data)
  • Presentation of the student’s data, joint analysis of the student’s data
  • questions and comments from participants
  • final comments by Scott Kiesling.

There is time for up to three students/researchers to present their work during the one-day workshop, but up to 25 people in total can come to the event. Researchers at all stages of their career are welcome to attend. Lunch and coffee breaks are covered by the doctoral program.

PhD students in the University of Helsinki Doctoral program are given the priority, but advanced MA students and post docs can also apply.
