Annual Review of Animal Biosciences launched

Annual Reviews has launched a new journal Annual Review of Animal Biosciences. Unrestricted online access to the first volume is available until February 2014.

“The Annual Review of Animal Biosciences places a particular emphasis on biotechnology, genetics, genomics, and breeding, as well as veterinary medicine, especially veterinary pathobiology, infectious diseases and vaccine development, and conservation and zoo biology. It is intended for scientists focused on wild and domesticated animal species, veterinarians, conservation biologists and geneticists.”

  • About 80% of our more than 30 000 journals are e-journals or also available as e-versions.
  • As a student or a staff member of the University of Helsinki (= as a holder of a user account for the University network) you can read our e-journals  anytime of day and from anywhere via remote connection.
  • As a local customer of the library you can read our e-journals on the library premises either by using the computers reserved for visitors or on your own laptop via a wireless HUPNet connection. The customer service desk can provide you with a temporary HUPNet account.
  • There are several alternative routes to our e-journal collections. You can find a certain e-journal through the search functionality of our web site or NELLI or HELKA or browse e-journals on a certain subject through NELLI. You also can start by searching for a certain article or articles on a certain subject  through the NELLI article search or Google Scholar  or through reference databases provided  by the Library. You will find links to articles on the result lists if the journal in question is subscribed to the Library.

E-thesis has been renewed!

University of Helsinki E-thesis-service has launched its redesigned website on February 18th. The site aims to serve better students and researchers publishing or depositing a digital thesis. In addition, the E-thesis website offers a gateway to searching and browsing open access theses of the University of Helsinki.

E-thesis service was initially launched in 1999. E-thesis has published over 4000 open access doctoral dissertations and over 3000 open access Master’s Thesis.  The open access theses in the service have over a million downloads in total every year. The service is maintained and developed in the Digital Services of the Helsinki University Library.

Erik Bruun’s exhibition in Viikki Info Centre Korona

Erik Bruun is a Finnish graphic designer whose work over the period of 60 years is on display in Info Centre Korona.

Bruun has designed over 500 posters, dozens of stamps, brochures, ex-libris signs, banknotes, company and society logotypes and book lay-outs. He has made innovations and creative solutions for different walks of life.

The well-known posters from 1950 and 1960 are timeless and part of common memory in Finland.

In addition to city and cultural themes, nature has played an important role in Bruun’s production. A classic among animal themes is Saimaa ringed seal (1974) which also became the symbol of the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.

Erik Bruun has participated in many domestic and international competitions with success and during decades he has gained acknowledgement in many fields. For example he has been granted the title of Professor, he has received Pro Finlandia medal (2007) and most recently Helsinki Design Award (2012).
