Engaging Luther

The Finns have published a joint volume on various aspects of Luther’s theology. It is entitled Engaging Luther – A (New) Theological Assessment and edited by Olli-Pekka Vainio. Quotation from the book description:

The volume consists of articles written by scholars affiliated with the project known as “the New Finnish Interpretation of Luther.” The topics include Luther’s theological anthropology, Trinity, christology, sacraments, faith, theology of the cross, the Virgin Mary, sexuality, music, and the spiritual reading of the Holy Scriptures.

Global Luther

Christine Helmer from Northwestern University has edited an volume entitled “Global Luther: A theologian for modern times”, published by Fortress Press. In addition to several interesting articles, the volume includes contributions by two Finnish scholars. Risto Saarinen writes under a title “Luther, the urban legend” and Antti Raunio on “Luther’s social theology in the contemporary world: seaching for the neighbor’s good”. The volume was based on a conference and the original lectures are available in YouTube.

Finnish scholars in SCSC, Geneva

Four reformation scholars from Helsinki are going to attend the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference in Geneva, May 2009. Titles of the papers are as follows:

Aarhus 2009

An international conference under the title “Reformation and theology – reception and transformation” will take place in the University of Aarhus, Denmark in August 2009. Risto Saarinen from Finland will be among the keynote speakers and several workshop topics are related to the interest of the Finnish Luther scholars. A review by Theodor Dieter

Theodor Dieter has reviewed the dissertation “Luthers trinitarische Theologie des Heiligen Geistes” (Luther’s trinitarian theology of the Holy Spirit) by Pekka Kärkkäinen in Theologische Revue 3:2008. The review is partly positive, but also includes severe criticism on methodology and use of secondary literature.
