The MES programme is an master’s degree programme for students of history, political science, and area and cultural studies.
The duration of studies is 2 years (120 ECTS). The language of tuition is English. It is possible to complete a part of the studies in another language.
There are a number of features that make this programme quite special.
Flexible degree structure
The degree structure gives you the framework for your studies, but you will decide yourself which courses you will take. This gives you excellent opportunities to specialize on topics of your choice and choose study methods that you are most comfortable with. Read more about the programme structure
Programme with many faces
The programme offers a range of major subjects to choose from. Read more about the major subjects
Besides the major subject, you will also complete European studies in other disciplines. The joint seminars of all MES students provide you with a multidisciplinary environment for discussion and developing your ideas and views about Europe.
Not just about the EU, but all things European
There is a reason why the programme is called Master in European Studies and not Master in EU Studies. You can specialise on the EU studies if you want to, but you can also adopt an entirely different approach to explore the diversity of European history, politics, culture and society.

No tuition fees, great student benefits
Almost all university education in Finland is free of charge, so there are no tuition fees in this programme either. The membership in the student union, however, offers you great benefits, including health care. Read more about fees, costs and grants
High student satisfaction
The programme has always had a very high level of student satisfaction. Read more about what the students have to say about the programme
Great career prospects
There is currently a great need of professionals with relevant training in issues relating to Europe and to European integration within the public and private sectors. The programme will provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue a career in higher education institutions, local and state administrations, the European Union and international institutions, non-governmental organisations, and the business sector.
If you are interested in pursuing a career in academic research, the programme provides you high quality research training. The degree will give you an eligibility for doctoral studies in your major subject.
