Sign up as a mentor for the 2018-19 programme

The University of Helsinki group mentoring programme is starting again this autumn, and we are seeking new mentors. Mentoring is a valuable way of supporting students´ transition into working life and helping them to clarify their goals and ambitions. The students taking part in the programme are mostly in their masters and come from different fields. The group size is between 2-4 actors.

You can sign up as a mentor here. Signing up is not binding, we will contact the potential mentors at the end of September.

Several of our mentors have found the role of mentor so rewarding that they have taken part in the programme more than once. Almost all of them would recommend being a group mentor.

The programme starts with a kick-off for both mentors and actors on Tuesday November 20th 2018 at 17-19. The closing will be held in May 2019. From November to May, the groups meet independently approximately once a month.

Take part in the group mentoring programme!

The group mentoring programme 2016–2017 has started in November and continues until May.

In the mentoring groups, students discuss different career paths and their strengths related to job hunting. The group brings added value, as students receive the support not only of their mentors, but also peers in the same situation. Based on earlier feedback, students find the opportunity to share their ideas, opinions and thoughts very helpful.

The programme offers a choice of 34 mentors, who are alumni representing different fields in society. You may read their descriptions here. A number of mentors are available for English-speaking students (see the group languages given by each mentor).

The programme is being organized for the sixth time and the following events are for all participants:

  • The group mentoring kick-off on 22.11.2016 at 17.00–19.00
  • Group meetings (4–5 times)
  • The group mentoring closing on 9.5.2017 at 17.00–19.00.

The programme is organised by UH Career services together with Alumni services and the University of Helsinki Alumni Association.

The Previous experiences have proved encouraging:

Mentor feedback: ”There was lively discussion our group. The themes we covered included career specialisation, project management, and career paths. The conversations were very rewarding and unreserved, and I was able to learn a lot myself. I hope I was able to share my experiences and open new perspectives for my mentees.”

Student feedback: ”The group was excellent. At first I thought mentoring would work best as a pair, but I think I was wrong – a group provided five times the joy! I heard more experiences and received peer support.”

The group mentoring will be organised in three languages: mentoring will be offered in Finnish, Swedish and English. As the mentors will be chosen first, the language of each mentoring group will be determined according to the wishes of the mentor. The students will thus have information on the language in which the mentoring groups will communicate available when applying. All written material will be available in all three languages, but the kick-off and final meetings that all groups participate in will be held in Finnish.

The application period for student applications will open in October.
