Åbo Akademi University has a strong Nordic research profile with excellent Nordic research networks. Research themes in Nordic history represent a long historical perspective in which gender and identity as well as rural history are particularly emphasised. Projects in Åbo Akademi University include “Male Citizenship and Societal Reforms in Finland, 1918–1960”, led by Pirjo Markkola and “The Peasant Figure and Masculinity – Gender, Class and Societal ideals in Finnish descriptions of the peasantry 1880-1940”, led by Ann-Catrin Östman.
