University of Jyväskylä has a strong profile in historical research. Department of History and Ethnology (Hela) is a genuinely multidisciplinary research community. The Department has a unique combination of subjects (ethnology, Finnish history, general history, and economic history) that generates a wide competence potential. Hela conducts research on various social, cultural and political agency as well as on the conditions, results, and temporal multilayeredness of such agency. NordWel’s theme group Religion, Lutheranism and the Nordic Welfare State Model is hosted by the department in co-operation with the Department of History at Åbo Akademi University.
