Lähdin opiskelemaan ranskalaista filologiaa, koska se tuntui tarpeeksi ”yleiseltä”. En tiennyt, mitä lukion jälkeen olisin halunnut tehdä, ja koska kielten oppiminen on ollut minulle aina helppoa, päätin kehittää osaamistani yliopistolla. Idean sain, kun näin lukiolaiskaverini lukevan pääsykoekirjaa. Pääsykoekirjoina toimivat yksi ohuehko ranskalaisen filologian kirja sekä novelli. Kokeessa oli kielioppia, historiakysymyksiä ja novellianalyysi, osittain suomeksi, osittain ranskaksi.

Pääsin yliopistoon, mutta opinnot eivät täysin vastanneet odotuksiani. Erityisesti itse ranskan kieli vaati työtä, sillä vaikka olin lukiossa kirjoittanut B-ranskan (eli keskipitkän) laudaturin arvoisesti, opintojen taso tuntui vaativammalta. Alkuun osa opetuksesta oli suomeksi, mutta melko pian kaikki vaihtui ranskaksi.

Muut oppilaat, joilla oli taustalla vaihtovuosia, suomalais-ranskalainen koulu, ranskankielisiä sukulaisia tai paljon matkoja ja A-ranska, pärjäsivät paremmin. En kuitenkaan sano, etteikö vähemmälläkin olisi mahdollista pärjätä. Valintakokeessa vaaditaan itse ranskan kielestä B3-oppimäärää vastaavat tiedot. Toki vähemmän ranskaa osaavan on tehtävä enemmän töitä pärjätäkseen opinnoissa. Oppimisen tueksi minulle suositeltiin lisäkursseja. Jatkoin opintoja jonkin aikaa, mutta koska kiinnostuin muista aineista enemmän, vaihdoin pääainetta.

Ranskan parissa jatkaneet ystäväni ovat viihtyneet. Monimuotoinen opetus – josta minäkin pidin – on nimenomaan tarjonnut heille erilaisia mahdollisuuksia. Oppiaineen yhteydessä tehdään kieliopin ja kirjallisuuden, eli ”perinteisen” opiskelun ohella paljon kielistudio- ja kuuntelutyötä, elokuvien katsomista, ekskursioita ja ryhmätöitä sekä tutustutaan kattavasti moneen maailman maahan juuri ranskan laajan levinneisyyden vuoksi.

Vaihto-oppilaaksi lähteminen ei ole pakollista, mutta erittäin vahvasti suositeltua. Vaihdon aika vaihtelee muutaman kuukauden ja vuoden välillä, ja vaihtoehtoja on monipuolisesti ympäri maailmaa. Ranskan kielen opinnot tarjoavat hyvän pohjan tehdä muutakin työtä kuin tavallisimmat vaihtoehdot toimia kääntäjänä tai opettajana. Kansainvälisessä työssä ranskan kielellä on tärkeä asema englannin ja kiinan ohella.

Ranskan kielen opinnot ovat tuntuneet hieman ohjatummilta kuin muiden opiskelemieni yliopisto-opintojen kokonaisuudet. Pakollista läsnäoloa on ainakin alkuun aika paljon, ja tietyt kielioppiasiat on opeteltava tietyn materiaalin mukaan – akateemista vapautta ja pohtimista sekä esseiden kirjoittamista tai laajoja tutkimus- tai analyysitöitä on vähemmän kuin esimerkiksi nykyisessä pääaineessani sosiologiassa.
