Suomessa kuulee usein sanottavan, ettei uskonnolla ole nyky-yhteiskunnassa enää samanlaista merkitystä ja asemaa kuin aiemmin. Onkin ehkä totta, että suomalaisessa viitekehyksessä erityisesti kirkon rooli sekä yksittäisen ihmisen elämässä että yhteiskunnassa on erilainen kuin vaikkapa vielä 100 vuotta sitten. Evankelis-luterilaisen kirkon jäsenmäärässä viime vuosina tapahtunut jyrkkä lasku ei kuitenkaan tarkoita sitä, etteikö uskonnolla olisi enää mitään väliä. Uskonto on ehkä muuttunut henkilökohtaiseksi yksityisasiaksi, mutta samaan aikaan se kuitenkin läpäisee yhteiskuntaamme monin sellaisin tavoin, joita emme kenties osaa edes huomata.

Oma kiinnostukseni uskontoa kohtaan heräsi yläasteen ja lukion aikana loistavan uskonnonopettajani ansiosta. Mitä enemmän opin kristinuskosta, maailmanuskonnoista ja uskonnollisuudesta, sitä paremmin aloin ymmärtää uskonnon ja erilaisten katsomusten kaiken läpäisevää vaikutusta kulttuurissa ja yhteiskunnassa. Samalla huomasin myös sen, että juuri uskonnollisten ilmiöiden tarkastelussa yhdistyivät hyvin hedelmällisellä tavalla kiinnostukseni kulttuuria, historiaa ja filosofiaa kohtaan. Valmistuttuani ylioppilaaksi aloitin opinnot Helsingin yliopiston teologisessa tiedekunnassa. Opintojeni päämäärä oli minulle tuolloin jo selvä: uskonnonopettajuus.

Tänä keväänä oma matkani teologian maisteriksi on vähitellen päättymässä. Taskussani polttelevat teologisten opintojen lisäksi aineenopettajan pedagogiset opinnot, yleisen historian sivuaineopinnot sekä monenkirjava työkokemus niin koulumaailmasta kuin seurakuntien nuoriso- ja rippikoulutyöstäkin. Uskonnon ja historian aineenopettajaksi valmistuminen ei kuitenkaan vuonna 2016 ole täysin mutkatonta. Yleisestä taloustilanteesta johtuen avoimet työpaikat ovat harvassa, ja lisäksi uskonnonopetuksen tulevaisuudesta käydään jatkuvasti kiivasta keskustelua. Muun muassa näistä syistä moni alaa harkitsevasti luultavasti kysyy itseltään, kannattaako uskonnonopettajaksi opiskella.

Suomessa on jo vuosikausia käyty keskustelua oman uskonnon opetuksesta luopumisesta ja siirtymisestä kaikille yhteisen katsomusaineen opetukseen. Evankelis-luterilaisen uskonnon ohella peruskoulun puolella opetussuunnitelmat on vahvistettu myös kahdelletoista muulle uskonnolle sekä elämänkatsomustiedolle. Vaikka käytännössä kaikkien näiden uskontojen opetus ei oppilaiden pienestä määrästä johtuen toteudu, on uskonnollisen ja katsomuksellisen kirjon kasvaminen Suomen kouluissa kuitenkin kasvattanut myös paineita yhteiseen katsomusopetukseen siirtymisestä. Yhteisen katsomusopetuksen järjestämistä onkin jo kokeiltu useissa kouluissa eri puolilla Suomea, mutta matka yhteiseen, oman opetussuunnitelmansa mukaiseen katsomusoppiaineeseen siirtymiseen lienee vielä pitkä – mikäli se ylipäätään koskaan päättyy.

Oli oman uskonnon opetuksen tulevaisuus sitten mikä tahansa, varmaa on ainakin se, että jonkinlainen katsomusopetus Suomen kouluissa säilyy. Koulujen katsomusopetus on yhteiskunnan tarpeista lähtevää tiedollista opetusta, joka tarjoaa lapsille ja nuorille sellaisia tietoja, taitoja ja kokemuksia, joiden avulla he voivat rakentaa omaa identiteettiään ja maailmankatsomustaan. Katsomusopetuksen läsnäolo kouluissa on äärimmäisen tärkeää, jotta kasvavat mielet saavat perehtyä omaan kulttuuriperintöönsä ja muihin maailmankatsomuksiin sekä kehittää eettisesti vastuullista elämänasennetta tunnustuksista vapaassa ja kiihkottomassa ympäristössä. Monipuolinen uskontoihin ja katsomuksiin liittyvä yleissivistys auttaa ymmärtämään uskonnon merkitystä niin yksilötasolla kuin yhteiskunnallisessa ja globaalissakin kontekstissa.

Kuten monet 2010-luvun tapahtumat ja uutiset osoittavat, uskonnon asiantuntijoille on tarvetta jatkossakin – nyt ehkä jopa enemmän kuin koskaan ennen. Samasta syystä uskonnollinen yleissivistys on äärimmäisen tärkeää myös niille, jotka eivät itse tee töitä uskonnon parissa. Jotta tällaista uskonnollista yleissivistystä voidaan pitää yllä, tulee koulujen huolehtia katsomusopetuksesta jatkossakin. Laadukasta katsomusopetusta varten puolestaan tarvitaan uskonnon, katsomusten ja kasvatuksen rautaisia ammattilaisia – siis koulutettuja uskonnon aineenopettajia.

Joten: kyllä, uskonnonopettajaksi kannattaa opiskella. Uskonnonopettajan työ on paitsi tarpeellista, myös äärimmäisen monipuolista ja palkitsevaa. Oma uskonnonopettajani vaikutti lopulta ratkaisevasti uravalintaani, ja itse toivon jonain päivänä voivani tehdä yhtä suuren vaikutuksen johonkuhun elämää, maailmaa ja tulevaisuutta pohtivaan nuoreen. Samalla toivon voivani uskonnonopettajana toimia yhtenä linkkinä ketjussa kohti suvaitsevaisempaa, eettisempää ja henkisesti rikkaampaa maailmaa.
