Olen Otto Kaplas ja olen 7. vuoden opiskelija, mutta Helsingin yliopistossa aloitin vasta vuonna 2016 syksyllä politiikan ja viestinnän maisteriohjelmassa. Opiskelin aiemmin yhteiskuntapolitiikkaa Joensuussa, josta kiinnostukseni politiikan tutkimusta kohtaan syttyi. Koska Joensuussa ei ollut mahdollisuutta opiskella valtio-oppia ja tai yleisemmin politiikkaa tein politiikan tutkimuksen perus- ja aineopinnot Helsingin yliopiston avoimessa yliopistossa, ja hain suoraan maisteriohjelmaan englanninkieliselle linjalle.

2. Mikä sai sinut hakeutumaan juuri tälle koulutusalalle?
Minulla oli runsaasti vaihtoehtoja eri valtiotieteiden aloista, ja aluksi mietin hakevani yhteiskuntapolitiikan kandiohjelmaan Helsinkiin. Valmistuttuani Joensuusta kandidaatiksi odotettua nopeammin tajusin, että voin hakea suoraan maisteriohjelmaan, ja vaikka yhteiskuntapolitiikka minua kiinnostikin, niin avoimessa suorittamani kurssit mahdollistivat hakemisen suoraan politiikan tutkimuksen maisteriohjelmaan.

3. Mikä on ollut opinnoissasi parasta tähän mennessä?
Ehdottomasti professorien ja opetushenkilökunnan taso, sekä opiskelijaelämä. Olen oppinut vajaassa kahdessa vuodessa valtavia määriä hyvinkin monimutkaista ja uralleni tärkeää tietotaitoa, jota en olisi varmasti oppinut vain kotona lukemalla. Haluaisin nimenomaan erikoistua energiapolitiikkaan ja turvallistamisteorioihin, ja ilman ensikäden opetusta ja ohjausta en olisi ikinä päässyt pro gradussani alkuunkaan. Lisäksi kurssien valikoima on valtava, ja on mahdollista syventää taitojaan juuri siltä aihealueelta joka kiinnostaa.

4. Miksi päätit tulla juuri Helsingin yliopistoon?
Helsingissä opiskelun lisäksi, minua kiinnosti ennen kaikkea yliopiston hyvä maine ja status suomen parhaimpana yliopistona. Suomen yliopistoista vain Helsingin yliopisto nousee mielessäni muita korkeampaan asemaan. Sieltä on saanut alkunsa Suomalaisuuden idea, suurhenkilöt ovat lähes kaikki valmistuneet Helsingistä, ja nykyaikana yliopisto on maailman huippuyliopistoista ainoa, joka on Suomessa.

5. Mitä haluat tehdä tulevaisuudessa? Onko sinulla jo urasuunnitelmia tai toiveammattia?
Energia-ala, kansainväliset instituutiot ja valtiolla työskentely kiinnostavat minua erityisesti, mutta olen kuitenkin loppujen lopuksi avoin urani suhteen, sillä valtiotieteellinen tiedekunta on valmentanut lukuisiin erilaisiin työtehtäviin. Pääasia olisi että pääsisin työskentelemään alaani lähellä olevissa työtehtävissä. Olen työskennellyt jo opiskelujeni ohella markkinoinnissa ja tehnyt harjoittelun Libanonissa kansainvälisessä kansalaisjärjestössä.

6. Onko sinulla antaa neuvoja tälle alalle hakeville?
Kannattaa pitää mielensä avoinna kaikille alan suuntauksille. Politiikan ja viestinnän opiskelu vaatii kykyä omaksua uutta ja olla avoin vastauksille jotka tuottavat haluttuja tuloksia. Kaikki maailman ideologiset suuntaukset ovat olemassa syystä, ja niiden opiskelu avartaa maailmankuvaa. Tietotaidon ja suhteiden hankkiminen on eräs tärkeimmistä asioista joita valtiotieteellisessä opiskelevan kannattaa oppia. Ei kannata vain liimautua kirjoihin vaan on rohkeasti opittava uusia asioita, tehtävä sitä mistä pitää ja tavata uusia ihmisiä.
