Olin myös huolestunut maailman ongelmista. Yliopisto vaikutti paikalta, jossa voisi kysyä kysymyksiä, ihmetellä, sekä saada vastauksia. Halusin viettää aikaa kirjojen ja ihmisten ympäröimänä – ja kuten moni muukin nuori, halusin tehdä maailmasta paremman paikan. Siispä otin suunnaksi ottaa selvää mitä kaikkea yliopistossa voi opiskella.

Menin lukiossa kuuntelemaan yliopistoesittelyjä, ja koulussamme kävi esittelijöitä arkkitehtuurista kauppakorkeaan. Huomasin kuitenkin pian humanististen aineiden vetoavan minuun eniten. Kun sitten viimeiset kirjoitukset tulivat ja menivät, hain opiskelemaan kulttuurintutkimusta. En ollut sydämessäni valmis onnistumaan, ja panostus jäi puolitiehen. Kun opiskelupaikkaa ei tullut, pettymys ei ollut kova, sillä pitkien lukiovuosien jälkeen teki hyvää hidastaa ja miettiä vaihtoehtoja rauhassa. Tiesin kuitenkin, että olisi mukavaa päästä opiskelemaan jo seuraavana syksynä.
Joulukuun pimeinä päivinä ymmärsin, ettei minun tarvinnut tehdä viimeistä päätöstä koko elämääni varten – minun täytyi vain ottaa askel johonkin mieluisaan suuntaan. Olin melko hyvä kielissä, sekä kulttuurien ja yhteiskunnan ymmärtämisessä. Rakastin myös kommunikaatiota, sekä tunteita, joita kirjallisuuden kautta välitetään. Siksi päätin hakea opiskelemaan englannin kieltä, sillä se vaikutti monipuolisen luovalta alalta. Valitessa englannin minusta tuntui, että saisin opiskella jotakin mitä rakastan, kuitenkaan mitään poissulkematta. Edessä oli enää päätös hakukohteiden järjestyksestä.
Miksi Helsingin yliopisto?
Minulla oli noin kolme tai neljä yliopistoa, joiden koulutustarjontaa aloin selailla aktiivisesti. Opin ensimmäisestä hakuprosessista sen, että minun oli parempi keskittyä hyvin yhteen tai kahteen hakukohteeseen, mieluummin kuin jakaa huomio liian moneen.
Pian päädyin laittamaan Helsingin yliopiston ensimmäiseksi hakutoiveekseni. Miettiessäni valintaani tajusin pian, ettei suomalaisten yliopistojen välillä ollut kovin monia eroja. Ne asiat, jotka erottivat Helsingin joukosta, olivat kuitenkin minulle tärkeitä. Helsingin yliopiston tunnelma vaikutti kansainväliseltä. Tiesin myös, että siellä oli mahdollista opiskella monia erilaisia sivuaineita. Se pysyi mielessä, sillä en ollut hakiessa kovin kiinnostunut perinteisemmistä ammateista, kuten opettajuudesta tai kääntämisestä. Myös yliopiston yhteydet muiden maiden yliopistoihin innostivat minua, koska olin pitkään miettinyt haluavani lähteä vaihto-oppilaaksi. Olen pohjoisemmasta kotoisin, joten prosessi oli pelottava, mutta ehdottomasti sen arvoinen. Tällä hetkellä olenkin opiskelijavaihdossa Seoulissa, Etelä-Koreassa.
Helsingin monipuolinen ja värikäs opiskelijaelämä

Myös kansainvälisyys näkyy Helsingissä monina erilaisina kurssivaihtoehtoina, ja opetusta voi saada monissa eri maissa asuneilta professoreilta ja lehtoreilta. Olen oppinut kursseilla enemmän kuin osasinkaan odottaa. Vaikka jotkut kurssit ovat saattaneet tuntua tylsiltä ja toiset vaikeilta, kaikesta voi selvitä, kun oivaltaa opiskelun ilon.
Iloa ja yhdessäoloa on löytynyt esimerkiksi järjestöistä ja harrastustoiminnasta. Helsingissä on kuitenkin mahdollista tehdä myös paljon yliopiston ulkopuolella; kaupungista tuntuu löytyvän jokaiselle jotakin. Aluksi kotiutuminen suurempaan kaupunkiin tuntui rankalta, mutta kaverit ja antoisat kurssit tekivät kaikesta helpompaa. Tekemällä asioita, joita rakastaa ja keskittymällä elämään hetkessä, nopeammin kuin huomasinkaan, kaupunki alkoi tuntua tutulta ja turvalliselta.
Yksi Helsingin ihanista puolista on se, miten tietoa ja tarinoita Suomesta tai eri mantereilta tuntuu löytyvän helposti niin kirjastoista kuin yliopiston käytäviltäkin. Vaikka olen pienen kaupungin kasvatti, Helsingin monipuolisuus ja luonto ovat tehneet minut onnelliseksi opiskelijaksi.
