Tapasimme ryhmämme nimikkotutkijan Nina Santavirran keskiviikkona 11.10. Tapaaminen oli läm­min­henkinen monenlaisia tunteita herättävä. Nina Santavirta aloitti kertomalla tutkimuksen taus­toista ja ennenkaikkea tutkimuksen tärkeästä alullepanijasta Singa Sandelinista. Santavirran ker­to­muk­sen kautta välittyi kuva suuresta tutkijapersoonasta ja ystävästä. Sandelinin alullepanema tut­ki­mus Jatkosodan aikaisten Ruotsiin lähetettyjen sotalasten kohtalosta tuli monella tapaa tut­kijoiden iholle, vaikka nämä pyrkivätkin kautta linjan säilyttämään tieteellisen ja ammattimaisen suhtau­tu­mi­sen aiheeseen. Aihe itsessään on ollut tabu Suomessa ja tutkimus oli tässä laajuudessa ensim­mäi­nen. Tutkittavat ovat kokeneet sotalapsiajan merkittävänä asiana elämässään. Tämä käy hy­vin ilmi sii­tä, että tutkijat saivat kirjaimellisesti päivystää lähes tauotta neljä vuorokautta neljän pu­he­limen ää­ressä kyselylomakkeiden lähettämisen jälkeen.

Tutkittava aineisto oli laaja. Tutkimusassistentit valitsivat satunnaisotannalla kortteja Kansallis­ar­kis­ton sotalapsikortistosta. Kaksi assistenttia työskenteli otannan parissa usemman kuu­kauden ajan. Tälle otantajoukolle lähetettiin sitten kyselylomake. Verrokkiryhmänä käytettiin sa­manikäisiä sa­tun­nais­otannalla Suomeen jääneitä lapsia. Tässä joukossa oli noin 6-8 % prosenttia sota­lapsia. Kyse­lyyn vastasi yli 60 % kaikista otantaan valituista. Osallistumis­pro­sentti on poikkeuksellinen, sillä usein kyselytutkimuksiin vastaa noin 30 % kyselyyn valituista. Tämänkaltaisten isojen aineistojen käsittelyssä käytetään yleensä tilastollisia menetelmiä. Tutkimuksen yksi tulos oli tuottaa ilmiötä kuvailevaa aineistoa. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin myös vaativampia tilastollisia menetelmiä, kuten varianssi- ja regressioanalyysia. Tutkijat tekivät aineiston hankitavaiheessa jo alustavan datan käsittelyä, joka kuitenkin myöhemmin osoittautui virhearvioksi. Tutkijat kirjasivat ylös lasten lähtö- ja tulopäivän sijaan Ruotsissa vietetyn ajan. Tässä prosessissa menetettiin kuitenkin tärkeä määrä dataa ja nämä puutteet jouduttiin paikkaamaan myöhemmin palaamalla kortistoon. Nina Santavirran mukaan raakadataa ei tulekaan muokata aineistonkeruuvaiheessa. Nykyaikaisilla tietojenkäsitte­ly­menetelmillä datan käsittely onnistuu kuitenkin hetkessä.

Ryh­mäm­me tekemästä tutkimussuunnitelmasta löytyi paljon samoja aineksia, mutta myös eroja, kuin Sandelin-Santavirran tutkimuksesta. Oman ryhmämme ajatukset tutkimuksen tekemisestä keskittyivät melko pieniin ja spesifeihin ryhmiin ja näin ollen myös kvalitatiivisiin menetelmiin. Santavirta oli käyttänyt tutkimuksissaan laajasti sekä kvantitatiivisia että kvalitatiisia tutkimus-menetelmiä. Ryhmämme pohti tapaamisissaan tutkimusryhmän kokoonpanoa ja tutkimukseen liittyviä eettisiä kysymyksiä. Tutkimusaihe olikin Santavirran tutkimuksessa hyvin sensitiivinen. Osaltaan tutkimusta tuki Singa Sandelinin psykoterapeuttitausta.

Sotalapsien kokemuksia kartoittava tutkimus oli yhteiskunnallisesti yllättävän merkittävä. Santavirran sanoin tutkijoista tuntui kuin he olisivat avanneet pitkään kiehuneen kattilan kannen. Vuosikymmenien ajan sensuroidut puheet ja vähätellyt kokemukset nousivat pintaan. Sotalapsiaihe on ollut pitkään kielletty aihe Suomessa sekä yhteiskunnallisesti, poliittisesti että myös yksityisesti. Sotalasten kokemuksia ei ole ehkä pidetty merkittävänä aiheena verrattuna esimerkiksi Karjalan evakkojen ja sodassa läheisensä menettäneiden kokemuksiin. Sotalasten ja koko Suomen kansan oletettiin myös olevan kiitollisia Ruotsille saadusta avusta. Sotalasten kokemuksista puhumista pidettiin jopa kiittämättömyyden osoituksena ja näin yhteiskunnallisesti sopimattomana. Suuri osa Sandelin-Santavirran sotalapsitutkimuksesta onkin ilmiötä kuvailevaa, koska tämänkaltaista perustutkimusta ei ole aikaisemmin tästä aiheesta Suomessa tehty. Vasta tutkimuksen aloittamisen jälkeen aiheesta on puhuttu julkisuudessa laajemmin. Aiheesta on tehty esimerkiksi elokuva ”Äideistä parhain”.

Tutkijavierailumme innosti ryhmäläisiämme pohtiman aihetta laajemminkin. Monien sukulaiset ja jopa isovanhemmat ovat olleet sotalapsina Ruotsissa. Vierailun perusteella moni havahtui huomaamaan, että omassa lähiympäristössä on ihmisiä, joita asia koskettaa omakohtaisesti. Tutkija Nina Santavirta onnistui välittämään tunnelmat käsinkosketeltavasti. Odotamme innolla seuraavaa tutkijatapaamistamme. Toivomme, että pääsemme tutustumaan vielä paremmin teoreettiseen tutkimukselliseen ulottuvuuteen.

    Jes! Todella upeaa, että kiinnostus tähän aiheeseen on herännyt, ja tutkimusta alkanut vihdoinkin muodostua.

    Kuten sanottu, on monia aiheita – liittyen kyseisiin ajankohtiin Suomessa – joista ei ole voinut puhua. Omakohtainen kiinnostus on lähinnä koskenut desanttien ja partisaanien toimintaa Suomen siviilikylissä, joista lapsien kokemukset koskettavat aina erityisellä tavalla. Näistäkään teoista ei Suomessa vielä yleisesti tiedetä tarpeeksi.

    Toivottavasti mahdollisimman moni nyt kiinnostuisi tästä teidän aiheestanne, jotta saataisiin tietoisuus leviämään, ja lisää tutkimusta aikaiseksi. Häpeilyn aika alkaa nyt viimeistään olla jo ohi, ja on aika puhua asioista niiden oikeilla nimillä. 🙂

    Varmasti kyseessä on myös häpeä, mutta äitinä uskoisin, että aihe on myös liian kipeä. Tunne omasta avuttomuudesta auttaa on liian sietämätöntä, joten on helpompi olla puhumatta aiheesta ollenkaan. Kun yritän paneutua aiheeseen, mieleeni nousee ajatus omasta lapsestani yksin, vieraiden keskellä pelkäämässä ja huutamassa äitiä, joka ei tulekaan. Joudun pakottamaan itseni ajattelemaan aihetta, mutta en siksi, että se ei olisi tärkeää, vaan koska se sattuu liikaa.

    Tänään nousi posterikierroksen jälkeisessä keskustelussa esiin se, miten samaa teemaa voisi tutkia myös yhteiskunnallisesta, sosiologisesta näkökulmasta. Tällöin fokuksessa olisi sotalapseus yhteiskunnallisena ilmiönä henkilökohtaisten kokemusten sijaan. Tätäkin aihetta voi siis tutkia mielenkiintoisesti monelta kannalta.

    Todellakin! Aiheeseen on tainnut liittyä hyvin paljon eettisiä kysymyksiä ja monessa kohtaa. Tutkija on itsekin puhunut monista eettisistä puolista tapaamisissamme. Kaiketi luulisin, että on ollut tärkeää koittaa välttää inhimillisen kärsimyksen aiheuttamista ja esimerkiksi juuri tuossa adoptointikysymyksessä saatettaisiin aiheuttaa paitsi surua ja kärsimystä myös esimerkiksi konflikteja perheiden välille. Itse ajattelisin, että tässä tapauksessa kysymys on kuitenkin ehkä “vain” tutkimuksesta. Eettisyys tutkimuksessa voisi liittyä myös siihen, onko tutkijoilla oikeutta tutkimuksen nimissä aiheuttaa kärsimystä tutkittavilleen. Tietysti muutenkin kuin tutkimukseen liittyvänä eettisenä kysymyksenä adoptointikysymys on mielenkiintoinen.

    Itselleni on ollut erittäin mielenkiintoista nähdä, kuinka eettiset kysymykset konkreettisesti linkittyvät tutkimukseen! Tähän asti tuntuu, että niistä on lähinnä aikaisemmilla kursseilla mainittu abstrakteina käsitteinä vain ohimennen, eikä niiden huomioon ottamisen tärkeys ole ehkä aivan aina tullut esiin.
