Så här minns jag mitt första ”möte” med det finska språket:
Jag är på en balettlektion på Kuula-institutet i Vasa. Jag är kanske fem år gammal. I slutet av lektionen sitter vi i en ring och gör tågymnastik (varvasjumppa) och jag upplever för första gången sendrag i stortån. Hjälp! Vad är det som händer? Upplevelsen är obehaglig eftersom jag aldrig har varit med om kramp förr och alla runtomkring mig talar finska. Hur förklara man att man har sendrag och tycker det är skrämmande när det enda man kan säga är ”kyllä” och ”kiitos”?
På balettlektionen är det viktigt med disciplin och man ska helst inte vara till besvär. Att vara liten och inte kunna förklara att något är fel är en väldigt otäck känsla. Jag minns den här lilla incidenten än i dag eftersom den i all sin enkelhet beskriver hur det har varit för mig största delen av livet.
Jag kommer från Korsholm, en väldigt svenskspråkig kommun norr om Vasa. I min familj talar alla svenska och trots att mina föräldrar alltid gjort sig förstådda på finska har de långt ifrån varit tvåspråkiga.
Jag har läst finska nio år i skolan. Jag har präntat ordlistor och skrivit värdelösa uppsatser om ”polkupyöräni”. Jag har ständigt klagat på min urusla finska och varit besvärad om någon tilltalar mig på finska i butikskassan. Jag har av osäkerhet slängt på luren när någon ringt och frågat ”jos äitisi on kotona?”. Jag har älskat Sverige för alla deras skyltar på svenska och det faktum att man kan beställa en kaffe utan att öva på förhand.
I dag är det annorlunda, tack och lov! Jag har tack vare de finskspråkiga miljöerna som jag tränat dans i och kompisar som jag träffat sen jag flyttat till Helsingfors äntligen blivit någorlunda bekväm med finskan. Jag har haft en trygg vän som jag kunnat säga allt möjligt knasigt åt, som har ryckt på axlarna och rättat mig utan att hela konversationen har dött för det. Jag har genom försök och misstag långsamt blivit bättre.
Skolan gav mig så gott som inget när det kommer till finskan. Där lärde jag mig vad jag inte kan, vilka former jag inte förstår och vilka ordföljder jag knappast någonsin kommer att få rätt. Slöseri med massor med tid kan jag tänka så här i efterhand…
