Unix and Linux

Unix is an operating system used especially for its many versatile features:

  • Unix is an operating system for multi-users: many users can use the same Unix server at the same time. When Unix is used as a server operating system, its users normally contact the Unix server via remote connections. This allows the users to use programs and their home directories on the server without having to save them to their local computer at all.
  • Unix can be used both in servers and in personal computers: traditionally, Unix has been used via a remote connection, but Unix and similar operating systems can also be used with personal computers.

Linux is a completely separate operating system from Unix, though Linux shares many features with Unix. This means that,. if you know how to use Unix, you will know how to use Linux, as well.
