MA Sophie Holm
Postgraduate student at the University of Helsinki and researcher at the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland. My current research deals with Sveaborg’s international and political background, more precisely Sweden’s international relations during the Diet of 1746‒1747. I am interested in the diplomacy, both in theory and practice, which took place behind the scenes: how did the possibilities to influence the Diet differ amongst the envoys as far as financial and social resources are concerned? How did the diplomatic discourse reflect contemporary ideas about international relations and the balance of power?
Many of the key figures in the social networks of the envoys are familiar to me, as they belonged to a political elite which was later honoured with bastion names on Sveaborg. My master thesis dealt with these names and contemporary names on other fortifications in Finland.
