Mäntymetsän koulu

Radan varrella sijaitseva Mäntymetsä on iso koulu: kaikkea löytyy – ja paljon. Kielten, kansallisuuksien ja pukeutumistyylien värikäs kirjo kiinnittää välittömästi vierailijan huomion. Yhden välitunnin aikana voi kuulla vaikkapa somalin-, venäjän- ja vironkielistä keskustelua koulun käytävillä. Etnisyys ja suvaitsevaisuus kuvaavat koko kouluyhteisöä.

Kyselyyn vastanneista oppilaista yli puolet oli 9. luokan keväällä suuntautumassa lukioon ja kolmannes ammattioppilaitokseen. Yli kolmannes ilmoitti tavoittelevansa yliopistokoulutusta. Ammatillista koulutusta kertoi tavoittelevansa vajaa neljännes vastanneista ja ammattikorkeakoulutusta noin kuudennes. Yli neljännes vastanneista ei kuitenkaan osannut vielä sanoa, mitä koulutusta tavoittelee.

Located along the railway, Mäntymetsä is a large school with a lot of everything. The spectrum of different languages, ethnicities and styles of clothing can’t go unnoticed in the school. During a break one can hear pupils talking in the corridors in for example Somali, Russian or Estonian. Ethnicity and tolerance define the whole school community.

More than a half of the respondents were heading for upper secondary school education after 9^th grade while one third were oriented towards vocational training. More than one fourth of the respondents weren’t able to specify the degree which they wish to achieve. Of those pupils who were able to name their educational goals, more than a third were aiming at an academic degree. A little less than one fourth were aiming at a polytechnic degree and about one sixth were aiming at a vocational degree.
