Just one path to a professorship – Unanimous conclusion at the Minerva Square

On Tuesday 11.2. the Central Campus Minerva Square was filled with active university lecturers and clinical teachers who had come to comment on the latest proposal for a teaching career at the University of Helsinki. The draft of the career path  for university lecturers and clinical teachers was introduced by Vice Rector Tom Böhling, who emphasized that the open discussion event for the entire university was a genuine opportunity to influence the final draft.

Comments were collected at six different tables with standing clerks. Participants were allowed to move freely within the 45 minutes set aside for discussion. I  participated in the discussions at two tables, the first on the proposal for a two-tier career model for university lecturers and clinical teachers, and the second on the invitation process for the position of an assistant professor. The frustration with the present career situation of university lecturers and clinical teachers was palpable.

Both groups  asked why the advancement to a full professorship was completely missing from the draft two-tier career model for university lecturers and clinical teachers. Why get people into the waiting room if they cannot get further? The participants did not understand why a career path does not lead to the top of the field.

The two-tier career path (university Lecturer – senior university lecturer) was seen as a pseudo-innovation that does not bring anything new to the experienced teacher-researchers in the  University of Helsinki. Most of the participants from different campuses have long been in a position similar to the senior university lecturer described in the draft, with their Titles of Docent and wide-ranging responsibilities. For these persons, advancing to the associate professor level is not an actual promotion, but instead  a necessary change of their title, which would be useful especially in funding applications and international contexts.

Both at the tables and in the joint closing remarks, comments were made on the draft´s high overall requirements for the senior university lecturer position alone. The participants shared the opinion that  the level of requirements was clearly higher than that of tenure track assistant professors recruited through open search. And what about the requirements for a full professor then? Does one need to receive the Nobel Prize to qualify for a full professorship, exclaimed one participant at my table.  Good question!

Towards the end of the event, the three main components of the draft (two-tier career path, invitation requirements for an associate professorship and general qualitative development of work) were put to vote. Tom Böhling promised that the comments of the event would be taken into account in further development and decision-making. Hopefully this is the case, because the  participants were unanimously in favor of an internationally recognizable career path following the example of LERU universities. So, not a separate two-tier career path for teachers, but one motivating path towards a full professorship for all teachers and researchers!

And what about the distribution of teaching responsibilities in our faculties and their units? At least those present at the Minerva Square event wanted to continue active teaching as assistant and full professors. The University of Helsinki has the opportunity to change the requirements for the amount of teaching in different positions.

Yliopistolla lienee mahdollisuus muuttaa opetuksen määrän vaatimuksia eri toimissa.
