Dr. Mikko Vastaranta received his M. Sc. and PhD in Forest resource science and technology from University of Helsinki (UH) in 2007 and 2012, respectively. Vastaranta is an adjunct professor in remote sensing of forests and currently working as a research scientist at UH Department of Forest Sciences and Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research. His current research interests include:  detailed remote sensing of forest, enhanced forest technologies and improved forest modelling using new data sources. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed scientific articles. During the last 5-years he has worked also as a Visiting Research Scientists in Pacific Forestry Centre (Canadian Forestry Service, Natural Resources Canada).

In his sports career he has achieved four Finnish Championship titles in mountain biking, seven Finnish Championship titles in triathlon and a bronze medal from European triathlon championships.
