Helsinki Summer School (HSS) is a three-week academic event in every August organized by University of Helsinki, Aalto University and Hanken School of Economics. This year HSS is organized in August 6 to 22 and our course offering includes all together 17  fully credited courses covering a wide range of academic fields – from Cognitive Neuroscience to The Welfare City and from Politics of Nations to Representation of Curves and Surfaces.

HSS courses are primary targeted to the advanced Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and PhD students, and applicants should have at least two years studies in university behind them. All of the courses are taught in English and to be able to follow the lessons and participate to the class room discussion, students have to be fluent in English.

Social Programme

HSS is not only about high academic classroom experience, but it is also about meeting new people and having fun in summery Helsinki. HSS arranges a wide range of social events to help the students to get to know both each other and Finland.  The whole three week experience starts with the official Opening Ceremony and during the following days the students got a possibility to get to know Finnish oddities and participate to dinner cruise, Mölkky-tournamet and Wildlife trip and Sauna.

The Intensive Finnish course

The Intensive Finnish course is targeted to the international master’s degree students who have just been accepted to the University of Helsinki. The aim of this course is to offer an introduction to the Finnish language and culture. Although English is widely spoken in Finland, knowing the basics of Finnish enables you to feel more comfortable in a new environment and makes it easier to get acquainted with Finnish people.

The courses have grown increasingly popular and many of them are fully booked as early as May.
