The Anniversary Celebration of the Student Union – You’re Invited!

The Student Union of the University of Helsinki celebrates its 147th anniversary November 18-26, and all members are invited!

The anniversary week is full of events ranging from free films and free entrance to Ateneum, to a singles’ night in the National Museum! The grande finale of the anniversary celebrations is HYY’s birthday party at the Old Student House.  All students of the University of Helsinki are welcome to the epic, most cross-disciplinary student party of the autumn term! Music and dancing are a given, but the celebration also features an student-sized ball pit, karaoke, and sparkling wine at very student-friendly prices. This is a night you don’t want to miss!

The anniversaries of student organisations are traditionally celebrated by glamourous white tie balls complete with three-course dinners, and ballroom dancing. HYY, the oldest student union in Finland, celebrates its anniversary on November 26. The student union was officially founded on November 26, 1868 when the Czar Alexander II allowed the public meetings of students. This day is also the re-inauguration day of the university after the Great Northern War of 1722.

This year the anniversary, and the anniversary ball, falls on a Thursday, but the day of the week varies from one year to another. At the anniversary ball representatives of the university, other student unions, and student organisations within the student union come together to celebrate HYY. All HYY members are also most welcome, and a formal HYY gives awards such as the Magister Bonus (‘the good teacher’) and the Best International Teacher.

The anniversary ball is followed by the the Birthday party at 11 o’clock, and if you can’t attend the anniversary ball, different student organisations hold pre-parties for the Birthday party at the New Student House, and at Domus Gaudium.

More information and the registration link for the anniversary ball can be found at www.hyy.fi/anniversary
