Friendship Family Programme for higher education students in Lahti starts in January 2013!

Did you know that international students at the University of Helsinki can study also in the city of Lahti? This year 14 new students started their studies in Lahti in the Master’s Degree Programme in Multidisciplinary Studies on Urban Environmental Issues (MURE).

Integration into a completely new culture is a challenging process for international students; in particular for those who wish to complete a degree in a foreign country and potentially settle there after finishing their studies. The Friendship Family Programme in Lahti is aimed at supporting international students with their integration into the Finnish society.

The programme is coordinated by Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Lahti University Consortium. It aims at matching international higher education students in Lahti with local families and offering these students an opportunity to experience real Finnish life and culture, as well as make new local friends.

Networking with local people enriches students’ experience of living in Finland. With the friendship family students can practice language skills and learn more about everyday life in Finland. In return, Finnish families have a great chance to increase their international experience, improve their language skills, learn about new cultures and make new international friends. Cook, go skiing or meet for a coffee – students and families can decide together what they want to do.

The Friendship Family Programme of the Lahti region starts in January 2013 and finishes in May 2013. The programme kicks off in a first meeting organised for students and families in January. After this the students and families meet approximately once a month during the summer semester.

Experience Finnish culture and everyday life though a local friendship family!

The University Promotes a Smoke-Free Environment

Towards a tobacco-free academic community. Our University will work towards a non-smoking environment.” This was the decisions of the University’s Cooperation Committee at the beginning of 2012 in response to a proposal by the occupational health and safety committees concerning a smoke-free University. The non-smoking policy will apply to the academic community as a whole, including both staff and students.

The non-smoking policy will be adopted during the academic year 2012–2013. After the launching of the policy smoking (normal and electronic cigarettes) will be forbidden in all University facilities and permitted only in designated areas outside University buildings. Areas designated for smoking will be located, with signs, at an appropriate distance from buildings to ensure that tobacco smoke does not enter the buildings. Smoking areas will be indicated on campus maps, and any changes will be reported on each campus. All University events will also be smoke-free.

After a tentative launch of the non-smoking policy last spring, the Kumpula Campus has removed established smoking areas which were unofficial or close to the main entrances.
On the City Centre Campus, areas previously used for smoking on the stairs outside the Main Building on Unioninkatu and in the immediate vicinity of the Fabianinkatu entrance were designated smoke-free. Waste bins incorporating ash trays at the entrance to the Porthania building were also moved closer to the street.

Want to know more about the smoke-free university? Ask Pirjo Kekäläinen, Occupational Safety Officer, Tel. 09 191 22257

This is where the fun begins

A world-class university needs to have world-class sport services. UniSport is a directorate commonly owned by University of Helsinki and Aalto University who provides a wide range of high quality health and wellness services, activities for students, staff and the wider community across our six campuses. A range of membership options and casual visit possibility are available with qualified and experienced fitness professionals to assist you in keeping active and having fun while studying or working at the University of Helsinki.

Our slogan is “more than exercise” and that is truly so. Our services were ranked third best University sport service in the world according to ISB survey (International Student Barometer, 2010). I think it is safe to say that we offer something for everyone who is interested in exercising in some way or another and we offer inspiration to those who have not taken that step yet. Our big goal besides making people move is to foster a social environment within the University. Our facilities, classes and events are a great platform to meet new people in a relaxed atmosphere. The only suits we wear are track suits.

You do not have to worry about the weird sounding Finnish language either. Everybody speaks English if necessary and some of the classes and courses are even held in English. UniSport warmly welcomes you to Helsinki. Please show up at our our service desk in any of the six campuses to register and get started!
