Vastatieto ja demokratian kriisi

1/12 – 17:00 – Oodi

Missä määrin tiedon demokratisointi on tuottanut liberaalin demokratian kriisin? Vai ovatko vastatiedon eri muodot sittenkin osa demokratiaa? Onko vastatieto uusi vai uudelleen syntynyt historiallinen ilmiö? Keitä ovat vastatiedon tuottajat? Missä ovat vastatiedon rajat: mikä tekee teoriasta salaliittoteorian? Milloin kritiikistä tulee epäilyä tai kieltämistä? Missä vaiheessa vaihtoehtoinen tieto lakkaa olemasta tietoa ollenkaan?

Helsingin yliopiston tutkijakollegiumin järjestämässä kaikille avoimessa tilaisuudessa etsitään vastauksia näihin kysymyksiin.

Tilaisuuden paneeliin osallistuvat aiheen kansainväliset johtavat tutkijat:
professori Elżbieta Korolczuk (Södertörn University & University of Warsaw), professori Martin Hultman (Chalmers University of Technology) vanhempi yliopistonlehtori Dr. Alfred Moore (University of York) ja vanhempi yliopistonlehtori Dr. Emilia Palonen (University of Helsinki).

Paneelin juontaa journalisti ja Tampereen yliopiston journalistiikan työelämäprofessori Johanna Vehkoo.

Democratisation of knowledge and a crisis of democracy

1/12 – 17:00 – Oodi

What do the prevalence of conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the persistence of climate denialism, and the institutionalisation of alternative knowledge producers bent on discrediting liberal rights have in common?

They are all symptoms of a ‘post-truth’ era, where informational overload makes it impossible to separate facts from ‘fake news’ and trustworthy sources from peddlers of misinformation. They are all forms of ‘contrarian knowledge’, characterised by the questioning and mistrust of as well as the opposition to mainstream sources of knowledge, such as the academia, media, and public institutions. They are all products of the confusion that has exacerbated the legitimacy crisis of liberal democracy. However, they are also signs of the unprecedented levels of access to, and acquisition and dissemination of, information. As such, they are (side?) effects of the democratisation of knowledge that has accelerated with the rise of the Internet, digital media and social media platforms.

Can it be, then, that the democratisation of knowledge has brought about a crisis of liberal democracy? Or, conversely, are the various forms of contrarian knowledge inherent to democracy? Are they a new or a reinvigorated historical phenomenon? Who are the actors who propagate them? And what are their limits: what makes a theory a conspiracy theory? When does criticism become denial? When does alternative knowledge stop being knowledge at all?

The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies invites you to an open discussion around these questions.

The event will feature scholars – Associate Professor Elżbieta Korolczuk (Södertörn University & University of Warsaw), Associate Professor Martin Hultman (Chalmers University of Technology), Dr. Alfred Moore (senior lecturer, University of York), Dr. Emilia Palonen (senior lecturer, University of Helsinki) – and journalist Johanna Vehkoo (Professor of Practice, Tampere University) as moderator.

This event is part of the international symposium “Conspiracy theories, denialism and scepticism: contrarian epistemologies between epistemic fringe and democratic core”, which takes place at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (Fabianinkatu 24A) on 1-2 December 2022.
