The project investigates various notions of dependence and independence ranging from functional (logical) and probabilistic notions up to more stable notions like causal dependence. We look at two main recent frameworks of representation: a) Dependence and Independent logics which focus on functional dependence; and b) Functional causal models which integrate functional and probabilistic dependencies but also give an account of causal dependencies. We investigate various criteria for differentiating the various notions of dependence and independence (epistemic, ontological) and assess the philosophical significance of work done in this area. The project led by Gabriel Sandu lasts for 4 years (2015-2019) and employs two postdocs.
