Viime vuosina monet maat maailmanlaajuisesti ovat raportoineet geotieteiden opiskelijamäärien laskevasta määrästä.  Joissakin tapauksissa tämä on johtanut dramaattisiin leikkauksiin geotieteiden koulutuksen rahoituksessa, jopa osastojen sulkemiseen tai tutkinto-ohjelmien lakkauttamiseen. American Geosciences Institute seuraa vuosittain opiskelijana aloittavien ja suoritettujen tutkintojen määrien kehitystä Yhdysvalloissa Geoscience Currents -verkkosivunsa kautta. Marraskuussa 2022 julkaistut tiedot osoittavat, että 2015 alkanut aloittavien opiskelijoiden määrän väheneminen jatkuu yhä kohti tasoja, joita ei ole nähty vuosisadan alkuvuosien jälkeen.

Yleensä Yhdysvaltain geotieteissä aloittavien opiskelijoiden määrän vähenemisen syinä on pidetty öljy- ja kaasuteollisuuden työllistymismahdollisuuksien heikkenemistä, jota Covid-19-paineet ovat nyt lisänneet. Monet geotieteilijät ovat kritisoineet yliopistoissa tapahtunutta budjettien leikkaamista lyhytnäköisenä varsinkin, kun geotieteiden koulutusta tarvitaan geo-osaajille, joita tarvitaan vihreän siirtymän tukemiseksi, esimerkiksi hiilidioksidin talteenotossa.

Huolissaan maailmanlaajuisesta tilanteesta EuroGeoSurveys, Euroopan geologisia tutkimuskeskuksia edustava järjestö, on käynnistänyt kattavan tutkimuksen eurooppalaisen korkeakoulutuksen nykyisistä suuntauksista. Tutkimuksessa avattiin kaksi kyselyä tammikuun 2023 ajaksi geotieteitä opettaville yliopistoille, ja tulokset julkaistaan myöhemmin tänä vuonna Elsevierin julkaisussa ”Geoethics for Future: Facing Global Challenges”.

Suomessa uutiset vaikuttavat kuitenkin valoisammilta. FinGeo -koulutuskonsortion mukaan hakijamäärät geotieteiden tutkinto-ohjelmiin ovat nousseet maassamme vuodesta 2017 lähtien. GTK:n Aku Heinonen, joka oli perustamassa FinGeo -konsortioita Helsingin yliopiston toimikautensa aikana, kertoo äskettäisestä 10—15 prosentin noususta HY:n geotieteiden kandiohjelmassa aloittavien opiskelijoiden määrissä. Kasvun on mahdollistanut valtion lisärahoitus, jolla vastataan kasvavaan geo-osaamisen kysyntään. Tulevaisuuden Geo-osaaja-tapahtumassa keskustellaan tämän suomalaisen ilmiön mahdollisista syistä sekä siitä, kuinka voimme sitä ylläpitää.

Many countries globally have reported a decline in the number of students registering for geoscience degrees in recent years. In some cases this has led to drastic cuts in funding for geoscience education, such as the closure of departments or discontinuation of degree programs. The American Geosciences Institute tracks the year-on-year development in undergraduate enrolments and degrees in the US through its Geoscience Currents webpage. Data published in November 2022 show a continuation of a decline in undergraduate enrolment that began in 2015 towards levels not seen since the early years of the century.

The usually cited reasons for the decline in US geoscience enrolments is the waning of employment opportunities in the oil and gas industry, to which Covid-19 pressures have now added. Many geoscientists have criticized the response of Universities in cutting budgets as short sighted, especially since a similar skill set is required for graduates going into careers aimed at supporting the green transition, such as carbon capture.

Due to concerns about the global situation, EuroGeoSurveys, an NGO representing the Geological Surveys of Europe, has launched a comprehensive investigation of current trends in European higher education. A pair of surveys was open for responses from geoscience educators during January 2023 and the results will be published in an Elsevier volume “Geoethics for Future: Facing Global Challenges” later this year.

In Finland however, the news seems brighter. According to the FinGeo education consortium, applications to geoscience degree programs have risen in our country since 2017. GTK’s Aku Heinonen, who helped to establish FinGeo during his tenure at University of Helsinki, describes a recent 10-15% increase in intake numbers at UH made possible by government funding and responding to the increasing demand. During the Future Geoscience Expert event, we will be discussing the possible reasons for the Finnish phenomenon, as well as how to sustain it.

Panelisteillamme on vankkaa kokemusta alasta ja sen kehittymisestä näillä eri sektoreilla. Kysymme heiltä, millaisia taitoja ja tietoja on tulevaisuuden geo-osaajalla heidän näkökulmastaan? Opiskelijoille ja muulle yleisölle on tietysti varattu myös aikaa kysymysten esittämiseen!
