The Negative Emotions Research Group will hold a workshop at the University of Helsinki on 10-11 October 2024. This event will bring together over a dozen emotions researchers from a variety of disciplines to develop interdisciplinary approaches to the study of questions like:
(i) What role do emotions play in social interaction and cooperation?
(ii) How are “negative” emotions such as shame, disgust, and anger learned, and what function do they play–and ought they play–in communal life and morality?
(iii) Which emotions related with social interaction have not been given the consideration they deserve in emotions research? How might a closer look at, for instance, anxiety, irritation, and the feeling of having been humbled enrich our understanding of social and moral interaction?
Each workshop participant will have 20-30 minutes to present new research based on a long abstract (750-1000 words) that will be circulated to all participants prior to the workshop. There will also be a Roundtable discussion and set of networking dinners that will give workshop participants the opportunity to talk with the broader University of Helsinki emotion researchers community.
