Apurahatutkijana Alkoholitutkimussäätiön rahoittamassa Yksityinen rahapelaaminen ja laiton rahapelien järjestäminen Suomessa 1950-luvulta nykypäivään -hankkeessa 1.1.-30.9.2018. 

Apurahatutkijana Alkoholitutkimussäätiön rahoittamassa Suurten ikäluokkien (ongelma)rahapelaminen: ikääntyminen, luokkaerot ja historiallinen muutos -hankkeessa  vuosina 2016-2017. Projekti on yhteistyöhanke VTM Maria Heiskasen kanssa.

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan suurten ikäluokkien rahapelaamista Suomessa. Ryhmähaastatteluilla toteutettavan tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tutkia suurten ikäluokkien rahapelaamisen käytäntöjä, kulttuureja, pelaamiselle annettuja merkityksiä sekä ongelmapelaamiselle altistavia riskejä ja siltä suojaavia tekijöitä tässä ryhmässä. Tämän yhden, erityisen sukupolven rahapelaamista lähestytään tarkemmin yhteiskuntaluokan, sukupuolen ja ikääntymisen lähtökohdista. Lisäksi tarkastellaan sitä muutosta, jonka suuret ikäluokat suomalaisessa rahapelikulttuurissa tunnistavat. Teoreettisina lähtökohtina tutkimuksessa toimivat Pierre Bourdieun ja Beverley Skeggsin teoriat luokasta, koulutuksesta ja sukupuolesta. Metodologinen lähtökohta on intersektionaalinen, ja näin ollen luokka, ikä, sukupolvi ja sukupuoli otetaan huomioon toisensa leikkaavina ulottuvuuksina.

Suuret ikäluokat määritellään tässä tutkimuksessa vuosina 1945–1955 syntyneiksi, eli ei vain suurimpina kohortteina vaan laajemmin ja kulttuurisesti yhtenäisenä ryhmänä. Tutkimuksessa toteutetaan kuusi ryhmähaastattelua (yhteensä 36 haastateltavaa), joista kolmeen ryhmään rekrytoidaan matalamman koulutuksen suorittaneita ja kolmeen korkeammin koulutettuja. Tämän jaon avulla tarkastellaan rahapelaamista luokkanäkökulmasta painottaen ryhmien välillä ilmeneviä eroja ja yhtäläisyyksiä rahapelikulttuurissa ja pelaamisen käytännöissä. Aineisto analysoidaan laadullisella sisällönanalyysillä.

Tutkimuksen tulokset tuottavat arvokasta lisätietoa tämän suuren, ikääntyvän sukupolven rahapelaamisesta, ongelmapelaamisen riskin tunnistamisesta ja liiallisen pelaamisen ehkäisystä. Lisäksi yhden sukupolven kautta on mahdollista tutkia rahapelaamisessa erityisesti kiinnostavaa luokkanäkökulmaa: eroavatko eri koulutustason saaneiden käsitykset ja rahapelikäytännöt toisistaan? Hanke on kahden eri Helsingin ylipiston oppiaineen (talous- ja sosiaalihistorian ja yhteiskuntapolitiikan) tutkijan yhteistutkimushanke. Tutkimushankkeen tuloksina julkaistaan kaksi vertaisarvioitua artikkelia (toinen kotimaisessa ja toinen kansainvälisessä lehdessä). Lisäksi tutkimusta esitellään vähintään kahdessa tutkijaseminaarissa koti- ja ulkomailla.
