Please, add your suggested journal articles for group discussion as comments to this post. Please, also write in a couple of lines why you think that we should all read the paper that you suggest.

I suggest:

http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/595761
Another suggestion for later.
Mott, K. A. Leaf hydraulic conductivity and stomatal responses to humidity in amphistomatous leaves Plant, Cell & Environment, 2007, 30, 1444-1449
http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1365-3040.2007.01720.x
And a third one.

I’m not sure about these – I think that they are too molecular for our purposes, but since I stumbled across them this weekend I thought I would alert you to them.
Stress-induced DNA methylation changes and their heritability in asexual dandelions. Koen J. F. Verhoeven, Jeroen J. Jansen, Peter J. van Dijk, Arjen Biere DOI 10.1111/j.1469-8137.2009.03121.x
and the associated commentary
For Tuesday 23rd February:
Photoinhibition and drought in Mediterranean woody saplings: scaling effects and interactions in sun and shade phenotypes.
Fernando Valladares, Iker Dobarro, David Sanchez-Gomez and Robert W. Pearcy
Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol. 56, No. 411,
Light Stress in Plants: Mechanisms and Interactions Special Issue, pp. 483–494, January 2005
The paper compliments a more recent experiment which furthers the results but with multiple stresses.
Is Shade Beneficial for Mediterranean Shrubs Experiencing Periods of Extreme Drought and Late-winter Frosts? F. Valladares et al.
Annals of Botany 102: 923–933, 2008 doi:10.1093/aob/mcn182
You can find an overview of this research group here or here in Spanish.
We start with the idea that most researchers look a shade responses in the field or forest without breaking these down into different wavelengths. How do these experiments contrast with ours where the focus is on specific spectral compositions? And which physiological indicators response interestingly when multiple stresses and transplants are considered?
I have one more paper to suggest. It is review/opinion paper that I think would be interetsing to discuss. The author is Prof. Ariel Novoplansky who is colaborating with us in the Academy of Finland grant application.
The paper is titled Picking battles wisely: plant behaviour under competition and was published last year (Ariel Novoplansky (2009) Plant Cell and Environment, 32, 726-741)
Should this be our next paper for discussion? I could introduce it.
As my previous suggestion seems to be too long for the time people have available I have another suggestion. Another paper from the same group:
Falik, O.; Reides, P.; Gersani, M. & Novoplansky, A. Self/non-self discrimination in roots Journal of Ecology, 2003, 91, 525–531
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/118832121/abstract
I think this review is very interesting to discuss, short and easy to read.

Thanks for the nice discussion we had on the paper of Brenner et al. 2006. Please, see in the links below some of the debate
