Green Economy Transitions in the Least Developed Countries

Green Economy Transitions in the Least Developed Countries: Multi-Scale Analysis of Energy and Forest Use in Laos and Cambodia (GET-LDC) (2015-2018)

Short description

Green Economy Transitions in the Least Developed Countries: Multi-Scale Analysis of Energy and Forest Use in Laos and Cambodia (GET-LDC) is a project conducted by a consortium from Finland Futures Research Centre (University of Turku) and Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (University of Helsinki).

The GET-LDC research project analyses green economy transitions in Cambodia and Laos. Green economy expectations in the LDC context, especially in Laos and Cambodia, relate particularly to the forest and energy sectors. This is so because firstly, in Laos and Cambodia wood fuel is the main source of energy (in both countries more than 70% of primary energy comes from wood fuels) and the majority of households depend on wood fuel. Secondly, forest and energy sectors and their developments are expected to bring economic growth to the two countries but it is an acute question how sustainably, resource efficiently and inclusively this can be done. Thirdly, dynamics in both energy and forest sectors bring into fore the possible tensions between the triple goals of green economy.

Objectives

  • To analyse and assess what kind of implications the differing green economy agendas are having on the forest and energy sectors (which are interlinked through wood energy use and which are the most important sectors in natural resource utilization) through a multi-scale analysis.
  • To assess how the forest and energy sector policies intersect in the context of inclusive green economy objectives.
  • To develop and evaluate future scenarios for green economy in energy and natural resources management for Laos and Cambodia.
  • To address climate change and climate change policies as a cross-cutting issue in the energy and forest sectors.
  • Compare experiences of Laos and Cambodia and analyse in what ways the cases of Laos and Cambodia are relevant for other least developed countries and developing countries in general.
  • Evaluate the relevance of the results for Finland’s development policy and the relevance for other development actors.
  • Strengthen the local research capacity and international academic collaboration.
