Julie Chen: I still do not understand your motivation for going to China at that time.

Verner Worm: The motivation for all of us, and you will hear this all around the Nordic countries, was that we thought that the Cultural Revolution was doing a lot of good things. Then when we came there we saw that it was not that good. But at the least we were reading at home that they had barefoot doctors in China. Of course, there were good things. The women’s position improved a lot during it. For example, the new marriage law from 1951 was a huge improvement to what they had had before. However, the Cultural Revolution was not a success and most of us started to criticise it after we had come there.
