Social Media, Propaganda and the Rise of Digital Nationalism in China

The lecture lays out the general picture of how digital nationalism has been rising within the contexts of technological evolvement and state propaganda campaigns in China. Three sub-topics will be discussed: the platformization of Chinese society, the usage of social media in state propaganda, and the formation of young Chinese netizens’ worldview. The lecture aims to enlighten the audience to observe and interpret China from an inside perspective.

About the speaker: 

Jiang CHANG, PhD of communication studies, is visiting professor at the Department of Cultures of the University of Helsinki. His research interests include media culture, propaganda and gender issues in digital China. He has widely published in English, Chinese and French, and is the recipient of several prestigious academic awards. He’s currently collaborating with Julie Yu-Wen Chen on projects to promote Chinese studies in Finland.
