Helsinki Finnish

Helsinki Finnish is a joint research project of the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Helsinki and the Institute for the Languages of Finland. The four-year project (2008–2012) is funded by the Academy of Finland, and lead by professor Marja-Leena Sorjonen.

The project studies and describes different Finnishes spoken in Helsinki, especially in Eastern Helsinki, as they are spoken in different communities by people of different ages, Helsinki-born people as well as people that moved to Helsinki from somewhere else. The researchers in the project are sociolinguists and conversation analysts, and in most of the sub-projects, ethnographic methods are employed.
