Tervetuloa seuraamaan Case Vehkalahti -projektia!
Kuusikymmentä vuotta täyttävä Vehkalahden kotiseutumuseo on Husulan kylässä Haminassa sijaitseva pieni tunnelmainen museo. Museorakennus on alun perin rakennettu kouluksi vuonna 1871 ja se oli Vehkalahden ensimmäinen julkinen koulu. Koulu toimi rakennuksessa 1950-luvulle asti. Last spring I was teaching a course in which students of different fields had a chance to do their own, qualitative studies on local activists working on sustainability issues. The idea was to have a follow-up course in which students would create an exhibition based on this material.
I am happy to inform that this exhibition course – Changing Helsinki Pt. II – Creating a Research-Based Exhibition on Grassroot Activism and Sustainability – will be taking place in spring 2020. Once more, it is open to students of different fields (e.g. Ethnology, Museology, USP, ECGS, Geography,…), and it is not necessary to have participated in the previous course!

Recently, two of our doctoral researchers in Museum Studies here at the University of Helsinki have received positive funding news. Shikoh Sharaiwa has received a Finnish National Agency for Education scholarship, while Mari Viita-aho has received a grant from Oskar Öflunds Stiftelse sr.
Shikoh explains:
I have been awarded one of the Finnish Government Scholarship Pool 2019-2020 by the Finnish National Agency for Education, whichprovides me with funding for 9 months. The scholarship is a monthly allowance and offered for “doctoral level studies and research at Finnish universities or public research institutes” for 3-9 months. The application was sent to the Finnish Institute in Japan for the selection process, then a recommendation from Japan was sent to the Finnish National Agency for Education. I am one of 17 recipients and the only Japanese national to get such a grant in this round.
Mari says of her grant:
Oskar Öflunds Stiftelse sr granted funding for my research for finishing the first article of my doctoral thesis. The whole thesis is about museums as social institutions, and their possibilities for making a change in society. This article I am working on right now, bases partly on museum policy documents in Finland, and is partly a review of Nordic museum studies research during the past decade. In the article I concentrate especially on the concept of participation, its usage and varying functions. Oskar Öflunds Stiftelse sr works for support of nonprofit action in different areas of science and culture. I thank for the foundation’s confidence and appreciate this opportunity to concentrate fully on the writing process for the next few months.

Taking it online!

For most of the year Suviranta is just a home for it’s current residents, but during summer season it is open for pre-booked tours 3 times a week. For those occasion a home becomes a museum – a home museum. These visits provide a unique experience of the original atmosphere. The exhibition group of the Case Suviranta has been thinking about how to extend the experience beyond this restricted audience. One option is to rely on the images that the visitors sheered on their social media platforms. With their help physical exhibitions gets duplicated online seamlessly.
Museums can also be more mindful about their presence on the internet. 3D models are a great choice for opening up the museum to a wider public and showing spaces that otherwise might be unachievable – like the second floor in Suviranta. These models do not only produce visual information, they are also functional. Interactive models can allow the visitor to engage with the space virtually and return to places over and over again. Amongst others Dimensa has been working with museums and art galleries to form such a 3D model. Gallen-Kallela Museum and Mannerheim Museum are some examples. Virtual tour in the Hallwylska Museet´s Picture Gallery is as also magical as the real visit.
Virtual 3D exhibition, that also produces other information besides a documentation of the space, requires much more resources and a bigger team. Besides 3D animation, it also becomes relevant to think of the knowledge that the exhibition can sheer. Does it have a specific topic like the traditional exhibitions? Developing a separate concept for an online exhibition is more rare in museums.
Planning and executing an exhibition in a museum might take 1-5 years. Online exhibitions are no different. Curators work closely with programmers and some cases even with artists to assure that the form fits the content. During this three month museology course the exhibition group has been researching different options for virtual tours. In addition to 3D exhibitions one possibility has be small scale web-site that provides in-depth knowledge about the key objects of the museum. The strength of the exhibition group of the Case Suviranta is the fact that many students in the group come from elsewhere – they are here as exchange students. The group can bring value by tell the history of Järnefelt from a perspective that is fresh and easily approachable also to the foreign audience.

Valtaosan vuodesta Suviranta toimii yksityiskotina, kesäkaudella siihen on mahdollista tutustua ennakkovarauksella kolmena päivänä viikosta. Tuolloin tila muuntuu kodista museoksi – kotimuseoksi. Vierailun aikana kävijät voivat kokea autenttisen ateljeekodin tunnelman. Yksi museologian projektin ryhmistä on pohtinut, miten laajentaa mahdollisuutta kokemukseen myös heille jotka eivät pääse käymään Suvirannassa? Yksi vaihtoehto on kävijöiden kuvat ja niiden jakaminen sosiaalisen median kanavilla. Vierailijoiden avulla kokemus siirtyy paikasta verkkoon ja se on myös muiden käytettävissä.
Museoilla on monia mahdollisuuksia laajentaa näkyvyyttään verkossa. 3D mallit ovat toimiva tapa tuoda esille uusia näkökulmia ja laajentaa vierailu esim. tiloihin jotka ovat muuten kävijöiden saavuttamattomissa. Suvirannassa nämä tilat sijaitsevat rakennuksen toisessa kerroksessa.
Virtuaalinen museovierailu antaa mahdollisuuden tutustua museotilaan, museoesineisiin ja taiteeseen. Museokäynti voi tapahtua ajasta ja paikasta riippumatta. Yksityiskohtiin voi palata uudelleen. Yhtenä alan toimijoista Dimensa on luonut useiden eri museoiden ja gallerioiden kanssa virtuaalisia 3D museotiloja verkkoon. Nämä esittelyt toimivat sekä tietokoneella että mobiilina ja ovat katsottavissa myös VR laseilla.
Kolmiulotteista museokäyntiä voi halutessaan jalostaa normaalia museokäyntiä monipuolisemmaksi. Se voi toimia omana erillisenä näyttelynä kohteille, joita ei aina esitellä itse museossa. Osa virtuaalisen museonäyttelyn kehittelyä onkin miettiä mitä lisäarvoa uusi media voi tuoda kävijälle? Onko verkossa täysin vastaava näkymä vai jotain ihan muuta?
Monet kulttuuriperintökohteet ovatkin ottaneet käyttöön verkossa katsottavia esittelyitä, mutta erillisen verkkokonseptin kehittäminen on harvinaisempaa. Erityisen hieno on Tukholmassa sijaitsevan Hallwylska museetin tilojen ja kokoelmien esittelyt. Virtuaalinen käynti kuvagalleriassa on kuin olisi paikan päällä. Digitalisaatio antaakin museoille mahdollisuuden esitellä myös sellaisia kohteita, jotka eivät muuten kestäisi näyttelyolosuhteita.
Museonäyttelyn suunnittelu vie aikaa, jopa 1-5 vuotta. Verkkonäyttelyn suunnittelu ei eroa tästä. Onnistuneen näyttelyn tuottaminen edellyttää kuraattorin ja digitaalisen alustan tekijän jatkuvaa vuorovaikutusta. Välillä mukana on myös taitelija. Näin saadaan tuotettua näyttely, joka sopii saumattomasti museon fyysiseen tilaan ja virtuaalisessa näyttelyssä se sopii näyttelyn sisältöön.
Museologian projektimme kolmen kuukauden aikana yksi ryhmistämme on selvittänyt eri vaihtoehtoja joiden avulla Suviranta kokemusta voisi laajentaa verkkoon. 3D näyttelyn lisäksi yksi vaihtoehto on tuottaa verkkosivu, jossa on lisätietoa teoksista ja museosta. Näyttelyitä suunnitteleva ryhmän vahvuus on ulkopuolisen näkemys, heistä useat ovat vaihto-opiskelijoita. He voivat tuoda uuden ja erilaisen näkökulman Suvirantaan ja Eero Järnefeltin taiteeseen.
