University Lecturer

Rick Bonnie

Rick is University Lecturer in Museology at the University of Helsinki since 2021. He holds a docentship in archaeology from the same university, with an emphasis on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern archaeology. Rick’s research interests include museum and heritage ethics, object biographies, decolonisation and provenance issues, museum collection histories, and sensory archaeology.

Rick received his training in archaeology and heritage management at Leiden University (MA, 2008) and the KU Leuven (PhD, 2014), receiving in 2008 the W.A. van Es prize by the Dutch Institute of Cultural Heritage. Prior to his position in museology, Rick held since 2014 various research positions at the University of Helsinki. He co-founded and currently is still a member in the Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires. In 2017 he spent four months as a research fellow at the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan. Finally, he was the lead curator for the Tutkimusmatkoja muinaiseen Lähi-itään (“Exploring the Ancient Near East”) exhibition at the National Museum of Finland in Helsinki (18.5.–4.9.2022) and the Museum of Central Finland in Jyväskylä (15.10.2022–1.1.2023).

Rick is the author of 2 research monographs and about 20 peer-reviewed research articles and an editor of 2 edited volumes and 2 journal special issues. He is also an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Community Archaeology & Heritage (Taylor & Francis). Currently, Rick directs two funded research projects and is the co-PI of a funded workshop series. On behalf of the University of Helsinki, he is also a member in the UNA Europa steering committee on cultural heritage, which has developed the Una Europa Doctoral Programme in Cultural Heritage (Una-Her-Doc).
