New Book: Det politiska äktenskapet

See here for a new book on family policy and marriage (in Swedish) by NordWel researchers, Det politiska äktenskapet

Summer School 2010 was a success

NordWel Summer School 2010:

A sense of excitement in the air

NordWel and Re-Assess joint summer school brought together two generations of welfare state researchers in Svendborg, Denmark.

The aim of the summer school was to stimulate critical discussions across disciplines and between established scholars and the coming generation welfare state researchers. Over the six very intense days more than 40 PhD-students from Europe and the US as well as more than 20 senior scholars were engaged in discussions of papers and lectures.

The high standard of the papers, of the key note lectures and the very open and critical discussions both within and between the formal sessions were considered by the organizers as signs of a very successful summer school. As stated by one the participants in her feedback to the organizers: “There was a sense of excitement in the air, and that is always a very good thing.”

New Book: The Evolution of Modern States

Sven Steinmo: The Evolution of Modern States (Cambridge University Press, NY 2010)

The Evolution of Modern States is a significant contribution to the literatures on political economy, globalization, historical institutionalism, and social science methodology. The book examines the political, social and economic history of three different nations – Sweden, Japan and the U.S. – and explains how and why these countries have evolved along such different trajectories over the past century.  Bringing together social and economic history, institutionalism, and evolutionary theory, Steinmo thus provides a comprehensive explanation for differing responses to globalization as well as a new way of analyzing institutional and social change.

New Book: In Experts We Trust

Åsa Lundqvist & Klaus Petersen (eds.), In Experts we Trust. Knowledge, Politics and Bureaucracy in Nordic Welfare States, University Press of Southern Denmark 2010

http://www.universitypress.dk/shop/in-experts-we-2841p.html

What is the relationship between science and politics in the Nordic welfare states? What role has experts played in the development of the Nordic model and who were the experts? Based on in-depth analysis of the historical of the welfare states in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in the 20th Century, this volume offers a multifaceted analysis of the interplay between science, experts, politicians and institutions in policy areas such as public health, unemployment insurance, child psychiatry, alcohol research, and social insurance. The book brings together empirically grounded studies of the interplay between science and politics, the theoretical perspectives adopted in different political contexts, and the relationship between the internal dynamics of disciplines and research environments.

The volume is the result of seminars and discussions within the NordWel theme group 3 on “Epistemic Communities: Knowledge and Social Interests in the Making of the Nordic Welfare State”.
