Both research and public discussion on the Nordic model is characterized by a series of ‘key concepts’, which are seen as typical for the Nordic model or at least are taken as a self-evident point of departure for the discussion on it. These are concepts such as ‘rights’, ‘universalism’, ‘equality’, ‘welfare state’ etc. NordWel’s seminars on Key Concpets in the Nordic Welfare aim to problematize and discuss these fundamental concepts in order to create knowledge on the different understandings of them and to reach a more qualified starting point for research.

The first Key Concept seminar was arranged in the Finnish Institute in Rome, Villa Lante, in 10-12 January 2008. Theme of the seminar was “Rights and duties/Rettigheder og plikter”. Some of the papers are already under publication, others will be published in a joint report during 2008.

Seminar description:
Originally a German invention connected to the history of ideas and the publication of lexicons, the history of concepts (or conceptual history) has in recent years turned into an important part of the so-called linguistic turn in the social and human sciences. Often drawing on the writings of the late Reinhart Koselleck and especially his idea of conceptual history as a scholarly enterprise situated between the history of ideas and the history of societies and social structures, an international variety of scholars has sought to push the boundaries of the discipline. With this two-day seminar, senior scholars as well as doctoral students and post-docs are invited to discuss the future of the field with special emphasis on the exploration of new methodological ground. In three separate sessions the relationship between conceptual analysis and the history of experiences (‘Erfahrungsgeschichte’), interpretations, and argumentation will serve as the take off for such discussions. In each of these sessions, a keynote speaker will give a theoretical introduction to the field then supplemented by two or three scholars presenting more case-oriented papers. For these sessions, we invite methodologically oriented papers by scholars with research experience in the respective field. The last sessions on both days of the seminar are workshops for Ph.D.-students who (regardless of discipline and empirical field of study) can have their work on concepts, discourses, experiences, interpretations or argumentation commented by a member of the CONCEPTA advisory board as well as the seminar in general. The Danish Research School in History will issue a 4 ECTS-diploma for such presentations (2,5 ECTS for registered participation without a presentation). The seminar is an open event with no seminar fee. For 300 euros the convenors will arrange for a seminar package including accommodation in Odense from the 23^rd until the 25^th, participation in the seminar dinner on Thursday, lunches on both days of the seminar, as well as transportation to Copenhagen on Friday (arriving app. 6 pm).

Förra året utkom boken Inte ett ord om kärlek. Äktenskap och politik i Norden ca 1850-1930, i Centrum för Danmarksstudiers skriftserie. Boken, som är skriven av historikerna Kari Melby, Bente Rosenbeck och Christina Carlsson Wetterberg och juristen Anu Pylkkänen, utgjorde slutrapport för projektet ”Det nordiske ægteskab i europæisk perspektiv. Modernisering og kønskonstruktion”. Inom projektet har också utkommit de två antologierna Ægteskab i Norden fra Saxo til i dag (1999), som ser äktenskapet i ett långt historiskt perspektiv, och The Nordic Model of Marriage and the Welfare State (2000), i vilken äktenskapsreformerna och den senare välfärdsstaten diskuteras av nordiska, engelska och tyska forskare. Mycket har skett under projektets snart mer än tioåriga studium av äktenskapet. Ny forskning har kommit till, nya perspektiv har dykt upp. Äktenskapet kan inte ses som bara en ram kring personliga relationer, utan måste kopplas till politik och makt. Äktenskapsreformerna från 1900-talets tre första årtionden har visat sig vara ett mycket centralt element i den moderniseringsprocess som skapade den nordiska välfärdsstaten. Vi hoppas att denna konferens ska vidga perspektivet ytterligare genom att ta in

• det utomäktenskapliga, som ogifta mödrar och deras oäkta barn, och äktenskapsliknande förhållanden som partnerskap och ”papperslösa äktenskap”
• historiens långa linjer (även in i framtiden) och det tvärkulturella
• äktenskap och familjebildning i andra kulturer
• de nya reproduktionsteknologiernas betydelse för familjemönstren

Plats: Stiftsgården Åkersberg i Höör (ligger centralt i Skåne, 40 min. med tåg från Malmö).
Deltagarantalet är begränsat till 30.

“Är svensken människa?” Rubriken till Henrik Berggrens och Lars Trägårdhs bok (Är svensken människa? Gemenskap och oboeroende i det moderna Sverige, Nordstedts 2006) är provocerande. I denna omdebatterade bok ifrågasätter författarna gängse föreställningar om folkhem och kollektivism genom att hävda att den svenska välfärdsstaten bygger på en individualism vars främsta värde har varit individens frihet och oberoende – också från familjen. Centrum för Norden-studier på Helsingfors universitet (CENS) arrangerar tillsammans med Pohjola-Nordens Helsingforsdistrikt en diskussion om boken. Lars Trägårdh är på plats för att presentera boken. I diskussionen deltar panelisterna FiDiPro-professor Bo Stråth, fil. dr. Norbert Götz, professor Pauli Kettunen, akademiforskare Anu Pylkkänen och professor Pekka Sulkunen tillsammans med publiken.
