I have set up my blog a while ago, and I have a few posts on it, but it seems very hard to find on google.
Is there any technical issue? It does not seem to be a simple pagerank issue, as even very explicit searches yield no result. https://blogs.helsinki.fi/sawala/

I just discovered that the “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” flag had been set. I strongly suspect that I did not set it myself, so I wonder why it should be the default option?

It used to be the default option for new blogs at some point but not for quite a while.

Unfortunately, after more than a week, google still does not appear to index the blog at all. Any advice how to make it visible?

Strange, there seems to be links to the new site from your old blog after all. Since all the content from there is now on the new blog as well you could perhaps ask the IT at Durham University to make a redirect (301 Moved Permanently) from your old blog to the current one.
