Kielet pääaineena, verkkopalvelut tulevaisuutena?

Kaikista yliopiston kieltenopiskelijoista ei tule kääntäjiä, opettajia tai tutkijoita. Uratulevaisuus voi kuitenkin vaikuttaa generalistista sekavalta, koska – no, mahdollisuuksia on monia, eikä niitä kovin monella kurssilla esitellä. Siksi julkaisemme ajoittain juttuja siitä, minkälaisiin tehtäviin ”yleisen linjan” alumnit ovat opiskelujensa jälkeen työllistyneet.

Viime joulun alla kävimme työelämävierailulla Franticilla. Frantic on suomalainen yritys, joka tuottaa digitaalisia palveluita, kuten verkkosivuja, intranet-kokonaisuuksia, verkkokauppoja, tsättibotteja ja niin edelleen.

Älä anna etuliitteen hämätä: digipalveluita tuotetaan edelleen pääasiassa ihmisiltä toisille, eikä esimerkiksi roboteille. Hyvän lopputuotteen on siis oltava huolella loppuasiakkaiden kanssa suunniteltu ja tiimisi kanssa ymmärrettäväksi ja koherentiksi kokonaisuudeksi hiottu.

 

Kieltenopiskelijan vahvuudet

Tässä kolme pointtia siitä, mitkä vieraan kielen opiskelijan erityisvahvuudet tällä alalla ovat. Kursiivilla vielä erityishyödyllisiä opintovinkkejä digitehtävien kannalta.

1. Se lopputuote – sehän on suurimmaksi osaksi tekstiä. Sinun hommaasi. Olet tekstiasiantuntija.

Tunnet pilkkujen paikat ja solmit kestävät sanaliitot. Osaat laatia nasevaa tekstiä vaatimusten perusteella. Valitset oikean tekstilajin kontekstin perusteella ja analysoit sujuvasti aikaisemmin tuotettua materiaalia.

Palveluita analysoitaessa tekstianalyysitaidoista on hyötyä. Tietämys korpuslingvistiikasta ja kieliteknologian perusteista on plussaa!

2. Ei kieltä ilman kulttuuria!

Tunnet monenkin maan tapoja, historiaa, kirjallisuutta ja mediaa. Tiedät siis, mikä ihmisiin missäkin vetoaa, ja toisaalta ymmärrät esimerkiksi ranskan teitittelyn salat.

Kulttuurintuntemus tarkoittaa menestystä niin kansainvälisten asiakkaiden ja työtovereiden kanssa toimittaessa kuin sisällöntuotannossakin.

3. Vuorovaikutustaidot hallussa.

Sujuvan vuorovaikutuksen perustana on se, että osaa asettua toisen asemaan. Ja sinähän osaat, koska osaat tulkita ja tulkata vieraskielistä puhetta.

Suunnittelu- ja analyysityössä selvitellään asiakastarpeita myös laadullisilla tutkimusmenetelmillä, esimerkiksi haastattelemalla.

Vierailulla meille esittäytyneet franticlaiset (franticaanit?) olivat opiskelleet pääaineenaan ranskaa, englantia, suomea tai yhteiskuntapolitiikkaa. He tekevät töitä muun muassa sisällöntuotannon ja projektinhallinnan parissa. Sujuvaa englannin kielen taitoa vaadittiin kaikilta, mutta esimerkiksi englanti valinnaisina opintoina ei ollut edellytys, jos kielitaitonsa saattoi todistaa muilla keinoin. Myös taito käyttää toimisto-ohjelmistoja jo ennen töihin tuloa on toimistotöissä plussaa.

 

Vinkkejä työelämätaitojen kartuttamiseen

  • Iso pyörä on jyrännyt HumIT-kurssit: yliopisto ei enää tarjoa esimerkiksi Office- tai Photoshop-kurssitusta. Kannattaa siis tutkailla netistä löytyviä MOOC (ts. massive open online course) -kursseja.
    Niitä voi käydä esimerkiksi ranskaksi: Portail de formations Office 365
  • Moni (ml. allekirjoittanut) on saanut kokemusta viestinnästä, markkinoinnista, kokousten pyörittämisestä ja hallinnosta järjestötoiminnan kautta. Esimerkiksi ainejärjestötoimintaan voi tulla matalalla kynnyksellä mukaan, vaikka jo seuraavaan kokoukseen! Uusien taitojen opettelu tuntuu huomattavasti merkityksellisemmältä, kun tekee itse päättämiään hommia kaverin kanssa :)
