Since the premier of the Hollywood romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asian (2018) that sheds light on the lifestyle of the ultra-wealthy in Singapore, discussions on East Asian elite consumption in the West begins to emerge. This is partly because the scale of wealth in the East is almost unimaginable by the Western standards. Nonetheless, the more important story to tell is that there has long been an elite class located in different East Asian regions that has long influenced the world of consumption both locally and globally. This lecture argues how East Asians transformed from consumers of Western goods to investors of the luxury goods industry.
