What?

The Summer School in “Language and Writing across Asia: Historical and Current Trends” deals with history, typology, application and current trends in the studies of language and writing across Asia, focusing on Thailand and China. Five different courses are offered on the following themes:

Creating writing systems for languages in Thailand
Studying and preserving ancient manuscripts in Thailand
Deciphering the Shang Chinese language and writing
Exploring typological diversity of languages and writings in China
Introduction to Tangut language

Given an uncertain and unpredictable global pandemic situation, the Summer School will take place in a hybrid mode enabling both virtual and physical participation.

How?

Participants can customise their personal programme by combining courses of their interest from one up to three courses. A successful participation in the Summer School courses is acknowledged in the form of a certificate of attendance, which will indicate course names followed and the amount of workload in hours for possible credit transfer at one’s own home university. Participants can ask their teacher for an extra assignment or take-home examination for extra hours of workload and grades to be added to their certificate.

The programme also includes activities to support the learning experience, such as field excursions to Bangkok’s China Town on a weekday evening, and the historic city of Ayutthaya on 18 June 2022 (subject to possible change, depending on the pandemic situation in June 2022).

Am I eligible to attend?

Yes, the Summer School is open to everyone interested in languages and writing systems of Asia, particularly Thailand and China. Participants need not have prior knowledge of Thai and/or Chinese but such knowledge will make the learning experience more fruitful. Basic knowledge of linguistics is recommended to be able to follow the courses. The language of instruction is English, so sufficient communicative skills in English are required.

Since many of the courses are arranged in the form of workshop with active involvement of the participants, there will be only limited number of seats available in each course to ensure that all participants get the most out of learning experience and activities. Seats in the courses are offered on the first-come-first-serve basis.
