Thousands of new e-books from De Gruyter available for four months

The Helsinki University Library has already purchased lots of e-books published by De Gruyter. Now the whole e-book collection (about 38 000 books) is at your disposal in the Helsinki University network for a four month period. This offer also includes partner press content: Harvard University Press, Princeton University Press, Columbia University Press, University of Pennsylvania Press, University of Toronto Press.

De Gruyter publishes material in the following branches of science: arts and humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural science, medicine and law. You can browse the e-book collection on the basis of the subject areas. The collection is updated monthly.

The books are available from the beginning of October 2016 until the end of January 2017, after which the most heavily used books will be selected to the library’s collection.

Trial: Rav Milim Hebrew Dictionary ~ until 30.9.

Rav Milim contains the entire modern Hebrew vocabulary, in all its layers and styles (historical, technical, colloquial, slang, etc.) with clear explanations, sources and usage examples

  • Full Hebrew thesaurus: A large compilation of synonyms: poetic, literary, slang
  • Dictionary of idioms and phrases, including their explanations
  • Rhyming Words: A list of all words which rhyme with the requested word
  • Grammar: Accurate grammatical analysis of each word in the dictionary – part of speech, gender, tenses, conjugations, root, proper vowel signs and spelling for every word in every conjugation

Updated Historical Statistics of the United States on trial until 30 Sept

Historical Statistics of the United States has long been the standard source for the quantitative facts of American history. Topics ranging from migration and health to crime and the Confederate States of America are each placed in historical context by a recognized expert in the field.

The fully searchable and downloadable electronic edition will permit users to graph individual tables and create customized tables and spreadsheets reflecting their own particular areas of interest. The data are readily available for charting, or statistical analysis.

Hey new student, do you need a library card for Helsinki University Library?

You can order your library card in advance with an e-form. The card will be available for pick-up after 2 working days in any campus library you choose.

Please, take your identity card or passport with you. You will also need a Finnish social security number or your certificate of attendance from the University of Helsinki.

Trial: The Colonial State Papers – a fascinating glimpse into British trade, history and overseas expansion

The Colonial State Papers are a collection of thousands of scanned documents and bibliographic records relating to English activities in the American, Canadian, and West Indian colonies between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

These documents give fascinating insight into British trade, history and overseas expansion: the earliest English settlements in North America, encounters with Native Americans, piracy in the Atlantic and Caribbean, the trade in slaves and English conflicts with the Spanish and French are all covered in this database.

Autumn Brings Changes In Opening Hours

Summer time is coming to an end and the new autumn opening hours will start on August 22nd 2016.

At Kaisa House there will be self-service hours on weekday mornings and evenings

The main library Kaisa House is open Mon-Fri 8-20 and Sat 11-17. The customer service is available Mon-Fri 10-19 and Sat 11-17.

Kaisa House will function as Self Service Library on weekdays from 8 to 10 and 19-20. Customer service personnel is not present during these self-service hours. The Library provides user instructions to device and premises. However, should problems arise, you can contact the staff.

Starting from Monday 22.8 the opening hours at Viikki, Kumpula and Meilahti are Mon-Thu 9-18 and Fri 9-16.
